***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

Updated the OP with a new 21.9 monitor added to the list (acer 35" gsync 200HZ 1080P screen)

AOC will be bringing a version of the 35" VA curved 144HZ 1080P screen with freesync

AOC C3583FQ with 35” 144Hz curved VA plus FreeSync

  • Can be overclocked to 160HZ
  • 45 – 160Hz freesync range
  • Release date around February
  • Supposedly to be about 20% cheaper than the benq and acer versions

Here's hoping with display port 1.3 and new GPU's coming this year that we will see some new exciting 3440x1440 displays...

With 'Low Frame Rate Compensation' that AMD have included in the drivers, the lower bound may not matter quite so much. In theory, that is. I haven't actually tested this, but if it works like Nvidia G-SYNC below the physical hardware floor then it should be quite decent at smoothing out the experience. :)

Sounds like some of these poor freesync ranges might be ok then... Is screen tearing still present though?

Honestly, I don't think I have played a game where 21.9 doesn't work, there have been a few that don't have support out of the box but they were easily fixed with flawless widescreen or some tweak in the config.

If I ever come across a game that doesn't have any 21.9 support then I rather have black bars at the side than a stretched or cut image, it would be annoying as 21.9 is so much more immersive than 16.9.

What is your monitor setup?

I find most 16.9 4k etc. to look fine on my 21.9 2560x1080 monitor using the "stretch" fit, they actually look better than a lot of the "3440x1440/2560x1080" as generally they have just had part of the top/bottom cut off.

I will eat my hat if the first 34" 1440 OLED screens are less than £2000.... Monitor tech. is a rip off especially when new tech comes about :(

Ah, didn't realise Phix had updated his post about that 35" screen. I was referring to the LG 34" 1440

The AOC 35" freesync range is 45–160Hz

Tbh all the UW VA screens seem rather poor for when it comes to motion clarity with that smear trailing etc. :( And don't they all have issues with noticeable banding?

Just looking at my bro's nexus 6p and all i can say is thay I so badly want an oled monitor, it just trashes LCD in every way.

I have read that the Samsung will be 100HZ, initially there was talk of it being 144HZ with display port 1.3 and iirc, it will have freesync too. I hope it is really good as I would love the higher contrast ratio and deeper blacks but no doubt it will be mighty expensive if the current Samsung 34" 1440 is anything to go by :(

In my testing the Samsung S34E790C actually had superior motion clarity overall than the Dell U3415W. So I certainly look forward to the upcoming C34F791WD. There are indeed some weaknesses with some pixel responsiveness (as is always the case for VA) but it is unlike any other VA model on the market for overall pixel responsiveness. The C3583FQ is simply nowhere near achieving such a good balance - despite the refresh rate increase, the pixel responsiveness is noticeably worse than on the Samsung. And I wouldn't say that they all have problems with 'noticeable banding'. In most cases it's simply that people are observing banded source images so the monitor simply displays that correctly. Yes there is what I would call fairly minor banding in places, but that's not exclusive to VA panels nor is it something most users should have an issue with.

Ah yeah, forgot about that Samsung screen and yup, the dell is shocking for response times, surprising, considering all the other 34" 1440 IPS were pretty good.

Fair enough about the banding and motion clarity/smearing, I just recall of a lot of people mentioning banding + black crush in a few games like elite in comparison to their IPS monitors.
