***21.9 Ultrawide Thread***

I've been using the taskbar to the left on and off for years now, it's pretty great. Although it's always a balance act between being able to have loads of windows in a long taskbar or just having icons only on the vertical. It's a pretty good set up even on 16:9 or 16:10 monitors.

I really want to go superwide, although Im currently using a GTX 780 and I think to dip my toe into the water it would be better to get a cheaper 29" 2560 x 1080 model to see if its really for me.

Although all these cheaper 29" models seem to be Freesync only which is a shame, as I obviously need G-sync for my GPU. So now Im considering switching to AMD and ordering a cheaper Freesync screen, any recommendations for one?

So one question that is really giving me trouble is just how big a deal is the gsync. From what I can see I can get an super wide 21:9 in the Acer XR34 for £300, to get the X34 or it's Asus equivalent is another 3-400 quid, is that a worthwile spend? I'm planning to pick up a 1070 so the adaptive sync for the monitor is out, but I figure I won't miss a feature I've never had. What I find hard to stomach though is the idea that gsync is worth more than upgrading to a 1080 or going AMD for freesync and getting two Fury's for crossfire.

At the minute, I'm looking at spending a £1000 to upgrade my visuals, but with Gsync that turns into £1400 and really I'm not sure I can quite grasp that. Is it really worth that price? Is it worth blowing that quantity of money and having to delay buying something I really want down the line like a VR headset.

Nothing wrong with 29" 2560x1080.

You still get the full benefits of 21.9, you just don't get as much screen space and vertical height as the 34" 1440 screens but there are 2 pros to this as well, significantly cheaper + far easier to run.

As for which screen, there really isn't much other than the LG ones :( So just grab the freesync 75HZ version.

Although I would wait as if you read back a bit we will be seeing more 21.9 screens with better refresh rates.

if you know where to get a xr34 for £300 then just do it, ocuk had the fury for £300 and for a £600 outlay that would be pretty epic.

Should read £600 on the XR34 I forgot to edit the price when I edited the line after I realised the way I wrote it was confusing, honestly why can't monitor manufacturers make naming conventions easier I really want to slap whoever is working on branding at LG in particular.

I considered the Fury, even the X as well, but it doesn't really measure up against the 1070 and they aren't cheap enough to justify buying two. And Vega is likely going to be priced above the Fury so it's going to be 1080 territory and still no firm release date. I could wait, but I don't think my 780 will quite manage the ultrawide so well so it's a double upgrade. I don't think the advantage of using freesync outweighs the advantage of having more raw FPS? If anyone has tried out both and thinks it does I would be delighted as it would save me another £100 to buy a Fury and I can grab a vega when it comes out and the price drops and crack it in with crossfire with the Fury.

Screen space and vertical height is pretty important, for me it's a much work as play so it's useful to get those extra pixels. Plus coming from a 1920x1200 I don't think it would feel as much of an upgrade and I want my monitor to be able to beat out the appeal of my laptop for work which has 3000x2000.

It would be nice to wait, but I'm out to buy in the next week or so it's not really much of an option. And from what I see a lot of those larger new panels with high refresh rates were actually lower res panels not just new 1440p panels.

So I guess the conclusion is just jump on the XR34, I just can't believe that gsync no matter how good it is, is actually worth more than buying a 1080 or a second 1070 which is what £400 difference will buy. I don't really understand how the freesyncs can drop £200 in price from the original MSRP and the gsyncs have managed to gain or even add to it to make a £400 price difference.

If your going to go superwide get 3440x1440 and test that, you'll only be disappointed with 2560x1080.

I'm completely fine with 34" 2560*1080. Desktop use is fine and games are brilliant. I guess it depends on your priorities. I'm familiar with 3440*1440 btw and have used one for work. Productivity wise I agree with you. For games and general desktop, not so much. Again, subjective, but 100 fps 2560*1080 looks a crap load better than 50fps 3440*1440p. So worth considering that too when upgrading.

Jumped on this beauty for an hour after work. PG348Q still suprising me. Looks absolutely stunning. Can see a good few more hours being played over the next couple of days/weeks ;)

Still in love with the 21:9, so many games old and new brought to life by it.

Still loving 21.9 for gaming as well, I was tempted to pack up PC gaming for console but there is no way I could go back to 16.9, it is just so squashed looking in comparison.

Been re-playing batman arkham city and origins lately and it has great 21.9 support out of the box:

Can't wait for a 34" 144HZ VA/OLED freesync monitor to come out!

So guys, I've been a bit out of the loop on these monitors, is there any news on new 21x9 IPS/VA 3440x1440 G-Sync models coming out this year? And whats the current favourite?

Thanks.

I got the lg34 88uc-b for a couple weeks now. It's the latest LG 34 inch 3440x1440 curved 21:9 display and damn is it good. A lot less backlight bleeding then all the predators.
Got to love freesync too. It's native freesync rate is only 55-75hz but you can change it to 35-75hz without any problems wich is really good.

There's nothing subjective about that, regardless of the fps, 2560x1080 over 3440x1440 will never in a million years look better. Just because the 100fps will feel smoother it will still never look better. I really dont know why you said that to be honest.
