23 mile skydive!

And to think he was 24 miles up but still not considered in space.

NASA put the start of space at 50 miles from the surface, its around that point where gravity from earth stops pulling you back. 62 Miles up and your not coming back without assistance. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Felix goes up again with a bigger balloon and tries for 35 miles or more :)

Absolute rubbish.

You have no idea of physics do you?

Can write up where you went wrong if you like ? (will take a few mins)

I made a thing! Felix was really, really high up in human terms.. but in comparison to the size of the earth, he wasn't that high at all.

The lower black line is the earth (assuming a perfectly flat and spherical shape) and the higher black line is Felix's jump altitude. Each pixel in the image is a mile

I did my 1st RAPS jump in July this year and to see what this guy did makes my 3,500ft static line jump look like a little hop.

For anyone detracting from the achievement and the immense skill needed to do such a feat without killing yourself is delusional & has quite frankly no idea what they're talking about.

Don't put yourself under any illusion; this is just a different take on advertising. It happens to suit the company well as they do ground-breaking activities that require energy, energy from Red Bull obviously. You'll probably see pictures of Felix drinking Red Bull too.

4.7 billion cans sold worldwide per year means they have a pretty big budget for product placement. While, imo, this form of advertising is certainly better than billboards and TV ads, it can easily be argued that profit earned by Microsoft and then given to charities is an even better way of promoting a brand.

That was precisely my point....

Gravity lasts a lot further out than 62 miles. The moon is kept in orbit around the earth by Gravity. Gravity is only over-ridden by stronger forces nearer an object. IF the universe was empty, and you placed at one side of it, and the Earth the other side, you would attract one another. It would just take a long time for you to actually meet....

Compared to a school globe, Felix was only 1mm away from it.

Forgive me for sounding dumb, but if he's jumping over New mexico surely from that altitude you could see the oceans and outlines of the actual continent?

Every image/video i've seen shows practcally the entire Earth being a desert landscape. No water/oceans in sight...

The other thing to remember is that all the pictures we see are taken through a "fish eye" lens - designed to give a good wide field of view of Felix/the capsule without being on the end of a massively long pole.

The side effect is that it looks like you can see virtually the entire globe from the camera shots, with a very pronounced view of the Earth's curvature - but from Felix's point of view, the curvature would have been much, much flatter.

Westie/Dimple, A static line parachute course costs £200, this includes all the ground training and your first jump which is from 3200ft, continuation jumps cost £45 which includes equipment hire and all revision/progression training. Back in the 80's you would have been jumping rounds which had a lower wind limit than modern rectangular Ram Air canopies, students can jump in winds of up to 15knts.

I did 5 round static line jumps from 2,500 ft and 2 x 5 second round freefalls from 2,500 ft.

sort of correct except you're not taking into account the expansion of the universe.

While everything is attracted to everything else, everything is also moving away from everything else. Gravity is enough to overcome that at relatively small distances (relative to mass) but that overcoming power drops off pretty quickly (because the force of gravity follows the inverse square law.. roughly). So you are right to say that the earth's gravitational presence is felt a lot further than 62 miles :D but placing one object at one side of the universe and another at the other won't bring them together.

Where did you do it Gazanimal?

SkyDive North West at Cark.

Not my local airfield by any stretch, but sister in law has a lodge near Kendal.

I have a DZ on my doorstep at Grindale near Bridlington where I live :D

I have a jumper at Tilstock who also jumps at Cark, never been there myself but the PAC is a nice plane.

I know the guys at Brid very well and although its a small DZ the atmosphere is great, Alex and Sara who own the place are really cool and the CCI George is a great bloke.

If you're ever Shrewsbury way pop in to Tily and say hi.
