I've never really been in touch with what specs on a monitor are good. I know that low response times are desirable, but not the be-all, and that when comparing contrast ratios the higher the better, but that's about it.. and I've probably even got those wrong. :p

I've poked around and I like the look of these 3:

Samsung SM-2493HM
NEC LCD24WMGX3
Acer G24 (is this available without red surround?)

Current monitor is a Samsung 930BF and I love it, served me well and is awesome.

Spec away please :)

I wouldn't bother with the Acer G24.

While its great for colors, its brightness isn't totally uniform over the entire screen, so it wouldn't be much good for photoshop work.

NEC LCD24WMGX3
I've got one and do most of the things you plan too.
It's a really nice monitor and have nothing negative to say about it.
Upgraded from Dell 2407 and it's much better.

NEC really is where it's at right now. I haven't used an IPS so I can't compare it to one, but it's the best VA screen I've used. I use it for games, coding, general use and the occasional movie.

I couldn't stand the horizontal gamma shift on the S-PVA screen I had - it drove me mad.

Haven't had any issues as yet, there's no noticeable input lag and the response time is nice and low too so no issues there.

I've played a bit of L4D on it and it was as I would expect ... no issues thus far; I have also tried Warhead on it and that too was lovely!

I did played some Civ IV as well and that's great - being able to see so much at once :D

Sounds promosing. I just wish these monitors weren't so expensive. Need to save up a bit of cash before i take the plunge. I really need a big screen sooner rather than later. Been putting it off for over a year now. Photoshop work and video editing is painful at times on a small 19 screen. Gaming is fine at low resolutions though for me as i can produce decent frame rates

What about the HP and Hazro alternatives?

The benq is PVA right? The 178 viewing angles are usually PVA I think. After reading a couple of views the Benq seems a better purchase (plus its about 70 quid cheaper)

I just wish the frame was black

It was all going so well until I saw this:

Same here. I've been gaming on a CRT for the best part of 10 years. I bought the BenQ FP241W and did notice some ghosting - especially in PES 2009 where the image is less complex than that of a FPS, where I actually didn't notice the ghosting as much.

I actually ended up sending the FP241W back today due to 3 dead pixels I subsequently found, but I think I may well have got used to the ghosting over time. I'm tempted to order one again because there just isn't anything out there that can offer as much in that price bracket.

So personally I'd say give the BenQ FP241W a shot. For £350 you won't get a better quality screen in my opinion. The review of the NEC on bit-tech & Trusted Reviews put me off a bit and I honestly can't imagine it being anywhere near ~£270 better than the FP241W. I'd also disregard the Dell 2408WFP entirely if you're remotely serious about gaming. :)

I play games from time to time but I like to play PES quite regularly with my mates and I'm not sure I could cope with ghosting.
