2gb to 4gb?

The P5ND2 manual talks about upto 16gb of memory being supported with various windows versions.

2000 advanced server
server 2003 enterprise edition
Both of which are 32 bit

64 bit versions are
sever 2003 standard x64 edition
xp professional x64 edition
server 2003 enterprise x64 edition

But then it says only 2Gb per slot is allowed, so thats 8gb total. Then it says depending on the chipset resource allocation it might show up as less.

All I know is my little 1gb dimms probably wont work.

Also I remember reading something about a plug-in ram board for pci slot being available..

512Gb!!!!11

If you installed total 4GB memory, the system will detect less than 4GB of total memory because of address space allocation for other critical functions, such as:

- System BIOS (including motherboard, add-on cards, etc..)
- Motherboards resources
- Memory mapped I/O
- configuration for AGP/PCI-Ex/PCI
- Other memory allocations for PCI devices

Different onboard devices and different add-on cards (devices) will result of different total memory size.
e.g. more PCI cards installed will require more memory resources, resulting of less memory free for other uses.

On a SLI system, since PCI-Ex graphic cards will occupy around 256MB, another 256MB will be occupied after you install a 2nd PCI-Ex graphic card. Hence, 2.75GB memory left only if two SLI cards installed on A8N-SLI Premium while 3.0GB memory left with one graphic card without other add-on devices.

This limitation applies to most chipsets & Windows XP 32-bit version operating system.

If you install Windows XP 32-bit version operating system, we recommend that you install less than 3GB of total memory. If more than 3GB memory is required for your system, then below two conditions must be met:
1. The memory controller which supports memory swap functionality is used. The latest chipsets like Intel 975X, 955X, Nvidia NF4 SLI Intel Edition, Nvidia NF4 SLI X16, and AMD K8 CPU architecture can support the memory swap function.
2. Windows XP Pro X64 Ed. (64-bit) or other OS which can address more than 4GB memory.

I have 6Gb of OCZ ECC Reg Ram. 3-3-3-8. 4xCPU1 & 2xCPU2. Never have i got even close to maxing out. Bios, XP64 & Linux 10.0 sees 6144Mb, but Taskmanager window shows ¼ or less.

Not much difference in any apps i use.

I think Cad would use that kind of memory and more, why so much if you never use it. I guess its future proof! Could put windows on a ramdrive as well..

hi all. still running the crappy 2gigs at the moment. installed xp x64 and getting all apps back on etc. very very tempted by the crucial offer of 1gb x2 sticks of pc 3200 for £100 inc vat and delivery. will sort pc out first then decide over the weekend how to proceed. need more power from gfx card though so gonna see what i can pull off.

and what if i wanted to make a 2 gig ram drive?

like i said can never have enough ram in a pc.

Whats the point in that? With 2Gb I never fill it up (no pagefile) so how you ever going to use a Ram-drive.

IT IS POINTLESS MATE!!! (first use of that for me :p )

Unless you do heavy photoshopping or video work, then your money would be better spent on a better mobo, Eg Ultra-D, or save and get Conroe.

Its just un-necessary, by the time things fill up 4Gb we will be on DDR3!!!

Definetly agree 2gb is more then most people ever use but using a ramdrive is very nice as I remember, everything loads instantly :D Only a hard reboot wipes it out, I'll have to figure out how to make one just for a laugh

They are called i-ram and a reboot doesnt wipe them out

hmm but ram is so cheapo now. only 100quid gets me 2 gigs of crucial pc3200 to match my existing setup. im not planning to build another system now till around 2008. and i fear ddr will go up in price then like sdram has now.

also im after a new gfx card but gonna wait a few more weeks till the new x1950 comes out and drops the prices on the existing stuff.

To be fair, if you fill 4Gb up the rest of the system wont be able to support it.

Like 512Mb X1300s, why? The GPU cant render quick enough.

Save your money.

The price of ram isnt going to go up in my opinion if anything the quality of ram is set to improve and ddr2 will become more popular soon.
Save your money for the newer technology, with conroe I think a lot will depend on memory latency since its the memory access times which will be slowing it down if anything.

This utility turns on a few good options in windows for those with an excess of memory - http://www.download.com/Cacheman/3000-2248_4-10216523.html?tag=lst-0-1

no i couldn't resist. crucial offered the ram to me for £85 all in delivered thansk to the discount voucher i had. so i will be 4gig mastering hopefully by this weekend. :D

hehehe 4gig i am so chuffed, look how big my ram capacity is oooerrrr :p
