3/4 way sli won't be enabled for GAMES

So from what im reading the only thing nVidia is saying is that they will only provide 2 way sli profiles through their drivers instead of 2,3 and 4 way. Nowhere do i read that they are actively blocking 3 and 4 way sli which to me would mean that you could in theory set up your own 3/4 way profile through inspector no?

Actually NVidia won't even be providing 2 way SLI profiles as this can only be done with DX11 which will soon be history, DX12 will be up to the game devs.

This entry has been added to the Nvidia drivers for a long time now:

Devs can't be expected to rewrite their engine (Remedy - Quantum Break, the entirety of Unreal Engine 4) for the benefit of a tiny percentage of PC gamers.

Temporal rendering is becoming a big thing, in a big way, and SLI needs to adapt. The easiest solution would be to do away with AFR completely, but GPUs are going to need a much, much faster connection if they want to use SFR (Not just mirrored VRAM)

Or, Nvidia go a step further and connect the GPUs in such a way that the OS sees them as one large GPU.

This whole "Developers are in charge of MultiGPU in DX12!" thing is overblown. They can decide whether they want to implement "Explicit Multi-GPU", i.e. vendor-agnostic SLI. As far as traditional AFR SLI is concerned, that's completely up to Nvidia and always will be, so long as the developer doesn't use graphical effects which break AFR.

So we can only assume that NVidia wont want us to use multiples of any dual GPU cards in the future then.

This is why all gamers need a strong AMD.

Competition keeps companies on their toes, without it users have to accept what NVidia decides to do -

Today - overpriced FE Pascal cards
Tomorrow - no SLI for 3 or 4 cards
Next month - what next.......

Nonsense, games dictate performance requirements, even at 1080p games have been pushing performance requirements for the past decade regardless of resolution. Ofcourse higher resolutions need more capable hardware but its the games themselves not the monitors that push performance needs.

Name me one game that a GTX1080 can't drive at 1920*1080@60Hz.

This'll help AMD slightly as to get the very best you'd want four 480x / vega gpus.

I'd definitely consider 3 x 480s over a 1080 for the same price.

I can only assume that AMD will be pushing multi crossfire with their new 400 series, seeing that NVidia seem to be playing it down.

and here i actually thought SLI 1070s was interesting for a second... arg FFS im tired of this BS. Conflicting reports all over the place.. one half saying SLI stinks and another half saying its perfectly fine for the majority of games.

Yes, well I think that says more about the game than it does about performance requirements. And if you think monitors don't dictate performance requirements then have a look at it's 4k benchmarks. ;)
Games dictate the hardware requirements, you can easily have a stylised or older game running at 2160p144. The push for realism pushes hardware requirements and performance, not monitor resolution.

Something people should be very concerned about is DX12 based games as mGPU support is left to the devs. Unfortunately all the game devs care about is making money and this can mean no mGPU support at all and that includes 2 way.

Why should average joe be concerned about that? The vast majority of gamers (90%+) use a single card, so this change wouldn't affect them at all.

Dunno if being mentioned but wouldnt maybe renaming games exe to say that of 3dmarks exe trick the profile into using 3-4way sli in games that way? Or some other hack to fool it into thinking a game is a benchmark that is ticked for using 3-4way sli?

If you're basically talking like how you can sometimes find an SLI flag via Nvidia Inspector for an alternate application to work with something that doesn't official support SLI, then this is.........potentially possible. To some degree.

I think the main problem would be that game profiles probably are not as closely related to benchmark profiles as game-to-game profiles are. Benchmarks are not useless or completely unrepresentative, but they're still not games. They dont always use the same rendering processes or sometimes just even the game engine being used can play a big part.

Why lock it off, just let people play around with profiles like now. Slap a SLI logo on games that are supported, like the Nintendo seal.

Very Apple-like decision.

Yet again one more reason to stick with a single card solution going forward. You could see this happing 18 months back. The interest at developers and Nvidia just started dropping of.

Today - You don't have to buy the FE cards, the normal cards came in at the same price as 980ti when they first launched , if people want to spend more moeny for there e-p then let them

Tomorrow - multi gpu scaling above 2 in real world scenarios has always been terrible for both camps focusing on 2 way smart use of resources

Next Month - With any luck we will have a sub £200 1060 to battle the RX480 and hopefully will shut up the AMD fanboys at least untill Vega lol
