3090 Reported To Be A Laughable 10% Faster Than 3080

i'm still thinking why they went this way ? just to save money ?(buy samsung over tsmc 8nm over 7nm ) were they that far behind amd that they had to ?
nvidia normally produce mid power(watts) cards that kick arse.. but they went very high power cards .. and a **** load more cores..
something still doesn't feel right ..

rubbish. It’s about $250 for the extra ram over the 3080.

either the 3080 should have been a $1000 or the 3090 should be

No, your paying most of the extra for the top tier chips that have viable for this level of GPU, that will be a very small % of the chips made, the Nvidia Quadro RTX 8100 will be an even more select chip.

It was similar around the 20 series release. I had to wait months before the card i wanted hit the market. Demand for 30 series is sky high for the more regular cards available at launch. I wont be surprised if the Aorus master and xtreme weren't out until later in the year again. I want a 3090 but need some reassuring reviews to support the outlay. If its universally 10% then ill put the £ towards a new CPU and pick up a 3080 whenever I can.

Going off the Videocardz leak, compared to the 3080 the 3090 is:

5.5 FPS faster in Metro Exodus
8 FPS faster in HZD
8 FPS faster in Far Cry
6 FPS faster in AC
8 FPS faster in Tomb Raider
6.4 FPS faster in BL3
12 FPS faster in Death Stranding
5 FPS faster in Control

I honestly expected more for £750 extra.

Not only does this leak make the 3090 look bad and the 3080 look good, it also makes the 6900XT look better if it will dual with the 3080.

Shows why the 3080 doesn't have nvlink though. Because if it did it would be better spending the extra £750 on another 3080! Haha!

The 3090 is mainly targeted for non-gaming tasks that required the extra ram and enterprise users

No it isn't nvidias entire presentation on it was about gaming. They are toting it as an 8k gaming card NOT a production card despite that being where it will excel so please don't muddy the waters with what they are marketing the card as.

Edit:fixed quote

Fine any 8k users roll up and can complain, the rest can pipe down. :)

Look at the size comparisons between 3080 and 3090 . The 3090 is just huge in comparison how on earth could that only equate to 10%??
Well, one theory which would account for difference: all the Samsung 8nm Ampere cards so far, that is the GA102 in the 3080 are being clocked very aggressively.
Well out side the node's perf/watt sweet-spot.
Therefore if the 3080 is already running near it's max, the 3090's silicon is going to be way past it's comfort zone and Nvidia were really forced to put a big a cooler with the best power delivery circuitry they could on it.
Hence the size.

On paper it was 20% max so would have accepted 15% but then expected the chips to be better and more scope for overclocking so with 500w cards and a waterblock I was hoping for2200-2300 boost and 20-30% better performance overall

Most of the people looking to get the 3090 are people who already own a 2080TI

I would expect a barebones minimum of 20-25% over the 3080. Ideally 35-40% but I highly doubt that will be the case . After the announcement I was expecting 50% over titan rtx but we all know that is a flat out lie .

The cooler means nothing. They both use the exact same GPU and the 3090 isn't some monster even when you look at the specs. The 3090 has over the 3080:

21% more CUDA cores
17% more ROPs
21% more SMs
384-bit vs 320-bit memory bus

That's a pitiful increase even on paper, and paper specs don't translate 1:1 into real world performance gains because there's always a bottleneck somewhere preventing perfect scaling. For example, the 2080 Ti should have been close to 50% faster than a 2080 based on the paper specs, yet was actually only ~30% faster on average at 4K (and less at lower resolutions). The 3090 is pointless for most people unless you really need the VRAM. The tiny specs and performance gap is also why I don't think there'll be a 3080 Ti. There's just no room for it in the product stack, especially when we know that a 20GB 3080 is coming, removing even the VRAM argument. The 3090 is what would have been the 3080 Ti. They just renamed it to stop people moaning about the price.

It seems that 3070 was meant to be 3080, and actual 3080 was supposed to be 3080TI and 3090 was meant to be Titan (so difference isn't high, just like before).

Only one logical explanation for such shift - RDNA2. :)

Will still buy 3090 though...

It’s not all that surprising, they showed literally no benchmarks for the 3090 on the Nvidia event. Only look how big it is and some streamers playing “8k”(cough DLSS) on a screen.

On the leaks that show 10% increase it had clocks in the 1700mhz. Getting it to 2000mhz should get you somewhere closer to that 20% difference I suspect.
