3090 - was it meant for gamers ?

looking at this as I have just bought this card here. the 3090 looks terrible for the money.
Most people bought 3090s before the 12GB version was released I'd hazard a guess at. They were all snatched up mid COVID/crypto boom.

The 3080 came out with 10GB VRAM in 2020, which was considered a bit low for a supposed 4k GPU

The 3090 was only about 10% faster, but the larger VRAM was better for ensuring you didn't hit issues with VRAM.

I seem to recall Doom Eternal had some issues with 10GB VRAM for example

The 3090 was an odd card when it came out. While yes it was a GPU that formed part of the mainstream GTX line-up aimed at consumers. Realistically it was aimed at the 'prosumer' market. Nvidia (correctly) identified there was a market out there made up of people who needed a GPU with that much VRAM but weren't willing to buy professional cards & "gamers" who wanted the absolute best that money could buy, even if the value proposition for that target market didn't exist.

I don't know why people get annoyed if the absolute best of something is too expensive. Henry Cavil for example is a PC gamer who bought a 3090 and his networth is £50 million.

What is wrong with very expensive graphics cards? The 5090 could cost £10,000 for all I care. There's plenty people at wall street who would happily buy 10x of them. How does it affect us in any way? Just buy a lower tier and be happy.

Pretty foolish take. The higher price of the top tier, the higher the price of the tiers below it... Of course I care about this.

I am not the market for the xx90 class cards (although I really want the VRAM). I'd be pretty miffed if the theoretical £10000 high end card pushes my few hundred quid GPU purchase into the the £2000 bracket.

With its 24 GB of RAM id be thinking it’s bound to be amazing but was it as it doesn’t appear to be much better especially considering the 4090 was so much better.

Was it a poor card ?

Well Jensen claimed it was an 8K gaming card in his original launch day presentation. But I'm not sure that many people who watched that assumed that it would be really capable of it.

The presentation's part about non gaming applications for the 3090's extra memory is worth a watch if you are still interested. I probably have more hours on traditional ray tracing rendering on mine than I do on gaming.

That’s how these 24 GB cards are really - lots of cuda cores and ram

I wanted a 3080 to upgrade from a 780 but didn't even try and get one on launch. May 2021 my mate joined a Telegram group and sent me an invite to it and within a week a shipment dropped and we both got 3080 FE's at RRP. Still using it and will be for a few more years yet.

I feel like the 5090 will be meant for gamers, the 5080 won't be a worthy upgrade for those even with a 4080 really. The only step would be the 5090 unless you sold your 4080 for a good price prior to launch and used a potato card for a while. But you'd still have to slap a load on top for a 5090

None of the XX90 cards are great value (I say that as a 4090 owner).

The difference is that last gen the 3080 (which I owned and sold on) was very good value and the 3080Ti (also owned) while not great value had you 90%+ of the performance for quite a bit less - making it at least better value.

The 4080 (before the supers) however was even worse value than the 4090 IMO.
