30xx Series Founders Edition

After a couple of months of messing about with underclocks, case fans and case fan speeds to try and keep my 3090 FE cool and quiet I finally bowed to the inevitable and took the glass out of the front of my case. The filter is still on.
Just did an hour of cyberpunk at 4K 60 with RT Ultra and HDR on. Card at 1950/900. Max temps were 67.5 core and 96 junction. Case fans, AIO fans and GPU fans all hit less than 1200rpm.
As a famous philosopher once said, 'That'll do pig.'

or in other words your case has crap airflow in at the front. ;)

Yup my case has crap air flow at the front. But I bought it knowing that because I liked the look of it.
The GN review showed around a 10 degree difference with the front off. It was workable with the old card but not the 3090.
Now it's essentially the same set up as a P500A, which I should have bought to begin with.

Which case do you have?

That is what I found with the cooling (or lack of) on my setup - it was workable with the 1070 - not so much with the 3070.

Asus Helios. The front has an argb strip buried in the bezel which passes through the glass and illuminates a sticker on the back of the glass. It looks good if you like that sort of thing but it means there's only a one inch air gap between the glass and the front filter and the only vents are at the top and bottom. I was going to space the bezels out so it could draw air in the sides as well but it turns out that the bezels hold the filter against the front. The temps on all my bits is pretty impressive now so it can stay off.

I found that even though I had plenty of exhaust fans, GPU, 360 AIO in the top, PSU and a 140 in the back the air coming out was getting hotter and hotter over an extended playing session. Now I'm getting air in it all works as expected. What did you have to do?

I'd sell my left ball to get an FE. Unicorn gpus for sure. One of the only ones that'll fit it my HTPC. All the others seem massive

There’s loads for sale on the auction site and FB Marketplace. Depends how much your left ball is worth I guess.

I was just using case fans for cooling on low RPM with a large passive CPU block - with the 1070 it worked, with the 3070 I had to turn up the case fans a bit and add a higher speed fan to the CPU heatsink or CPU temps were going up considerably.

TLDR - bought a foreign 12 pin to psu cable for a 3090 FE, PC didn't explode.

Ordered from a place that sounds like it's for mods that you do yourself. Price was £24.10 through Paypal and taking advantage of a free shipping offer. Cable took 16 days to arrive.

Visually the sleeving looks exactly the same as the cables that came with my Asus Thor PSU. Cable very flexible. No cable combs provided but I cut a couple of the 24 hole ones that came with my PSU down to size. Uses 6 wires from each of the PSU plugs into the 12 pin.

Fit into the PSU was fine, required a good push into the card. No audible click like the supplied adaptor but seems solid.

Pc booted fine, illuminted GeForce logo seems a couple of notches less bright. I used to turn it down in ICue anyway.

Did AC Valhalla for a couple of hours. Reported power draw was the same as with the Nvidia adaptor at 350w ish. Neither the cable or plugs felt particularly warm. Cable is slightly less ugly than the hell spawned abomination that came with the card.

I've got the same cable from same place and had it basically since launch it is fine lol

Was watching a vid the other day that was explaining just how high quality the Nvidia 12pin cable is, because basically it has to carry 600Watts of power! Just be careful man, that's a fair bit for it to be even remotely dodgy!!

I'll keep an eye on it. Still resolutely failing to do anything strange.

The thing is I made a huge blunder and bought the Phantecs Enthoo ITX case with my 10900K last June because my previous £50 ITX case could only take a 140mm AIO.

This was before the 3080s were released and most of the AIB cards are triple slot. I'm not aware of any ITX cases that can take a 280mm AIO and triple slot GPU, plus I still like to have 2 HDDs in Raid 1 for keeping everything backed up.

I really like the case I have but it can only fit either the reference 3080 or the EVGA XCS or something that's 2.2 slots. I should have just gone with a macro ATX case instead but I didn't know at the time that all the AIB 3080s would be triple slot.

I was then planning on simply getting the reference dual slot 3080, and we all know how that planned out. I9 10900K and I have the best ram possible (top 1% Micron E die and I only made this account to brag about that), but I can't get a GPU to match.

My 1080 Ti is still great, but I wanted to be able to play Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 with the raytracing add on and still cant.

I'm not wanting to get a new CPU / Mobo until Meteor Lake at least, so just want a dual slot 3080 minimum. At this rate I'll probably be waiting for a 4070 before I can have any raytracing.

I've also undone any overclocking on my 1080 Ti because I can't have it die at all now.

I want a 3080 reference in here so much :( https://i.imgur.com/qDqW8Ik.jpg

I don't think 3080 Ti or anything later will be dual slot anymore either.

I expect the Founder's 3080 Ti to be 2-slot. They are just populating two empty VRAM spots and using a better-binned die.

It should all fit under the 3080's cooler.
