360 or PS3? Cant decide...

Im not trying to say DVD9 is better then Blu-ray just that multiple DVD9 discs are such a big deal as some people make them out to be. By the time it will be a problem is when the next generation of consoles come out and then Microsoft will adopt either Blu-ray or HD-DVD as its format for games.

OK fair point, how about we some that up then...

At some point maybe 3 years from now DVD becomes a major limitation for game developers, so they decide to make the game for the PS3 due to BD.
Microsoft decide to release the Xbox 720 or whatever with a BD or HDDVD drive.
Then Microsoft are playing catch up again with Sony?

Sound about right?

The PS3 has it's issues, i.e no VGA for monitors but you can with the PS3 see Sony are trying to aim for it to be around for a long time, not 3-5 years, more like 5-7+. I always thought Sony went wrong with the PSP with it's added features but this time with the PS3 they've got it right.

Countless threads on this mate as you'd expect.

Do a search and you'll find anything you want :)
Spot on. This has been asked so many times in the past. Infact, it gets asked several times a week, so you won't have to look far for most peoples opinions on this.

I like how people are so confident that the PS3 will not break.
It'll be just like the release PS1's and PS2's that never ever had hideous laser problems...
After about a year of the PS3 kicking around I'd gamble it'll be a typical broken laser-fest.

Right chaps, cheers for all your input :) (esp. Stellios, that was one mighty post!)

I am going to wait till the 1st August to see what happens with the 360 and I am taking a trip to the metro centre sometime this week to have a hands-on test of a PS3. Just checked out what I will need for the HDMI-DVI conversion and its only a case of a £20 cable but you have to use the A/V Multiport for Audio out, can anyone show me what the other end of the A/V Multiport cable looks like please? Can the connectors be converted to a 2.5mm connection ala Xbox360?

Thanks,

Craig

If you have an amp that uses optical you can always use the optical out on the PS3.

I personally never had a problem with multiple discs, some of my favourite games of all time are on 2 or more discs. And what is this additional content for those 2 games you mentioned?
What you mean you had to swap discs to install on a PC? A bit different from stopping gameplay halfway through to put another disc in to load a map for example, don't you think?

To the OP, just look at the games that interest you more, many will be cross platform so look at the exclusives on either. i.e. Halo 3 or Killzone 2, which do you want more?

These threads should just be merged and stickied so people can just read through them.

im getting a 360 Tues. My mobile contract is up (currently paying £35 a month). The link are offering a 360 premium with 1 game with a new £35 a month contract (500 mins + unlimited txt) so well worth it for a £280 console i was going to buy anyway :)

I was going to do the same until I found an 12 month contract with 400 mins + 500 texts @ £35 per month with 11 months free on rebate, bringing the year's total cost for the phone to a grand £35.

I'll take the saving and use it as justification for buying one of the consoles when i please! :)

360: random chance to break and explode, killing loved ones

PS3: omg sucks and harnesses the energy out of the very core of the earth itself and cures cancer

(may contain traces of sarcasm)

i'd personally say you can see the difference but it doesn't seem anywhere near as big a jump as vhs - dvd on current screens. is it worth it? nope for a standalone, possibly for a ps3 but only if your into your home cinema experiences.

i've got them both and currently if i had to choose just one i would go with the 360 because it just has more available at the moment, the ps3 is a great bit of kit but i'd say there'll be much more for it in about 6 months time.

btw i got the darkness imported for the ps3 and it's class but i miss getting all the achievements like my mate currently is, accomplishments just aren't the same ;(

Not as big as the jump from VHS to dvd... hmmm...

VHS = 320x240 = 76,800 pixels
DVD = 480p = 720x480 = 345,600 pixels
PS3 = 1080p = 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels

DVD = 4.5 x the quality of vhs
1080P = 6 x the quality of dvd = 27 x the quality of vhs

current true hd is a bigger jump from dvd than dvd was from vhs.... simple as that :)

But it depends on the screen size as to whether you notice it. Watch Blu-ray/HDDVD on a projector and the leap is far more impressive than the leap from vhs to dvd. Watch it on a 32" tele and the difference is considerably less.

plus the leap from VHS wasn't just about image quality it was stuff like movie chapters, bonus features, dvd commentaries.

Oh... all useless features... movie chapters - ever heard of fast forward? Bonus features... use a longer vhs... commentaries.... does anyone actually waste their time sitting through a whole movie just to listen to what someone has to say about the movie??

What about multiple soundtracks, 5.1 soundtracks, 6.1 and even 7.1.

Also optional subtitles with different language options.

But then the same goes for dvd-> vhs.... watch it on a 14" lol

I have a 37" True HD TV.... I sit ~ 3-4 meters from it & can notice a huge difference between dvd and blu-ray.... more of a difference than vhs to dvd

Now that's more of the kind of thing I'm interested in & yes I have surround sound so I like the extra audio.

But then this isn't what the conversation was about... I was replying to a comment about the visual difference.... nothing to do with any of the other stuff... just visual differences, which all stem back to resolution.
