39 Bodies found in Lorry in Essex

If as reported, the tractor unit travelled solo from NI to Essex is significant because I don't believe a genuine haulage company would do that sort of 'dead' mileage. It wouldn't make financial sense.
In other words that driver and truck was sent specifically for that trailer.

Generally one would seek to avoid to plan such dead mileage, but when things go wrong (pallet missed from loading etc) then its whatever it takes to avoid fines or rejection of the load from what I saw when I did a couple of years as a clerk in a traffic office in a past life!

If he was then he maybe has an alibi... doesn’t seem like there was anything to deliver though...
I would, perhaps wrongly, assume there was a load on the trailer, and not just 39 dead people, otherwise the story seems even dodgier. A tractor unit driving all the way from NI to pick up an empty trailer just off the boat from Belgium and take it to an industrial estate a few minutes away...

Apparently the family have already been refunded the £30k, wish banks operated that fast. Takes an eternity to get money back from them.

Can't imagine what it was like for them though, literally suffocating to death and absolutely nothing they could do. They must have all died in transit from Belgium as the last text from one of the girls was around 6am local time in Belgium. So I'd say unless the lorry driver and couple who previously owned the lorry are directly connected to the smugglers they will not be charged with anything.

I presume 30k was done on one of those slave labour loan things. I mean if you had 30k why not just fly in as close as you could and pay someone off to smuggle you through the channel tunnel. Easy to get a fake EU passport for not a lot I would have thought.

It could perhaps explain why he’s still in custody though.

What?

"Take this money back and shut up" i guess, these criminals must be scared to death that their particular enterprise is at risk.

Makes no difference, that's 39 people murdered in the back of a truck in a western country. Easily good enough to be global news so a lot of countries will be keen to have something to say when the reporters come round.

He has not done that though, he's made numerous trips prior to picking up this trailer, back & forth over the channel as reported today.

One of the biggest problems with this sad story is the media especially along with Joe public have no clue as to how the logistics industry works.

An empty HGV earns zero, simple as that, operators would rather park them up than run them with no paying load.

That said, at £30k a pop per immigrant, there's no real need for a load in the first place.....

.

You’re right about that Scania, it’s true, John Q. Public have little or no idea of the vagaries of punching 40 tonners around Europe, and the agg involved in getting through customs, and on and off ferries.
Doesn’t stop them from hanging that poor s.o.b. involved in this Purfleet saga, before the truth is established.

I hope for his sake he is innocent, otherwise he's ******.

Vietnamese or Chinese, all the same thing to a British white person.

I think they had Dodgy Chinese passports which is why they were thinking they were Chinese. Can't see many reasons for Chinese to be illegally smuggled as their country is quite prosperous.

I do wonder why they want to come to the UK, they could have gone anywhere in Mainland Europe which is just as developed if not moreso than the UK why do they need to go to that final hurdle.

I've met so many refugees and economic migrants in the past 5 years and I can promise you from their stories they see the UK as basically the promised land.

Guys asking me daily what was the best city to live in. They all love football. Arsenal or Man UTD. Eritrean's, Kurds, Afghans the only ones that didn't praise the UK by default was Iraqis. Even the Iranian I met praised the UK. Hell I even met a Palestinian... when they found out I'm British I was their new best friend. Everyone speaks English, I don't think people understand just how much cultural influence we have over most of the globe.

Most of the Africans goal was to get a Swedish passport then freely resettle to the UK. The final destination, the long game. I found it utterly bizarre.

I can barely remember the guys guy's name but he basically did the rubber dingy to Italy from Libia, then a flight to Sweden on illegal documents then claim asylum at the Airport, route. He got the money from a family member that had already made it here and just pumped the benefit money he got back home.

Pretty messed up world. On a personal level it's heart breaking but it's happening on an industrial scale it's unsustainable to Europe.

Well we did kill their barrier to leaving their countries, dictatorship which got replaced with tribal extremism instead, so among the lack of infrastructure, criminals arise and corruption sets in for the loop of trafficking people who want to leave (if they're the wrong tribe or non-believers, then it's safe to assume they're running away legitimately).

I imagine also the BBC world service has a part to play in how visible the UK is, it's primary language being English makes it the first choice and the fact that our government couldn't give a **** about policing anything. They're just taking advantage because we left the proverbial door open, and the proverbial windows cost too much, and the proverbial roof is leaking because reasons, also there's multiple holes in the proverbial walls and a gaping tunnel in the proverbial living room.

Kudos to their intuition honestly, embarrassing for the UK and only going to get so much worse when much of the tropics devolves from an inability to be stable. Europe is going to have to close up shop at some point, which will be rather unpleasant.

Yeah there's so much spin it's unreal, it's difficult to truly compare/judge unless you've lived in other countries especially 3rd world ones. When I see immigrants I always think how good of a shape they are in mostly mentally. The reality for most people is just the daily grind though, paying many bills and trying to survive.

It's a real wakeup though makes you realise how conditioned we are for the better or worse when you meet someone who in this day and age truly think that this is the holy grail or places to live. The NHS is impressive though never understood why it's always taking so much negativity. Public transport is impressive and the legal system largely gets it's right. They just need to import the good weather.

Our legal system, lack of corruption and most importantly the rule of law set the standard around the globe.

We complain about it but life in the UK is very prosperous. We also aren't aligned to anyone, look at what's going on in the whole USA Vs china, we can dance in both camps without any problems .

Uh... sure, "dancing" is what they call it now when you're letting a bigger power dictates to you, while simply pretending to show a facade of punching above our weight, only to capitulate usually in the backroom, trousers ripped off.

The only dancing we're doing is on a pole.

Sorry that was cynical... still true.

The media has no clue but love to spout bs don't they.

The guy has been in questioning a while and people are being arrested.

What's the chances this guy called the police to protect himself after realising his passengers were dead? I don't know many reasons to pull over in a secluded spot with an "empty" trailer to check it's contents.

But then I am just speculating and he could genuinely just be an incompetent driver that only cares about getting the job done and none of the information.
