Gravy train? How?

They're illegal, what possible gravy train could they get here?

A Grey market job (nail bar) that pays just enough to eat, have a roof över your Head and send 50 quid a week home to support your entire familj/village?

The gravy train fallacy belongs with single mums having 65" TVs and ps4s and 1k a week disposable.

But yet again, the reality, I love that word, is the grey market illegal jobs.

Ever see that border patrol program? They did an episode from Stratford London. The amount of illegally working/living there was mind-blowing. They arrested, detained so many people just on a normal morning commute day.

It's not gravy but it's so attractive compared to a bamboo house in a flipping jungle.

That's not what gravy train usually means to the pleb reading the Sun, they don't dissociate so i won't.

Honestly i don't understand some of stories, why would a family with £10s of thousands pay so much to get their son/daughter to these dwellings just to send barely anything back? They clearly have money, is it all they have?

They'd be found eventually once Immigration bothers to do it's job...

Not comparable. I'd consider the prostitute a victim if she was killed in a murder spree, but not if she caught aids. The latter is more comparable to what happened here. No one intentionally killed them as far as we know, they engaged in risky behaviour and paid the piper just the same as a prossy with aids would have.

I think that’s more compatible to the truck being involved in a traffic accident or the ferry sinking and the migrants not being able to escape.

In this case there is an additional criminal act involved - someone has likely been criminally negligent in cutting off the air supply or freezing them. There is also the small chance someone outright murdered them.

It is a strange one. Surely if you had 30k to your name and applied the correct way. The UK would let you in anyway!?

Running away from communism? Let's face it we have become a bit soft.

There was a war going on with Communism for the better part of 40 years, i imagine being soft is just the reality that we live in isn't like it was prior to 1991. Why shouldn't we accept people who are actually persecuted, these folks aren't necessarily, but they might be?

You should move to Sweden. You would fit in so well here with the save the world mentality at the expense of your own.

One of the associated articles suggested that the money they spend is in the form of a loan from the gang who ships them, their eventual pay is split between servicing this loan, paying for their accommodation, and the remainder sent home to family.

I have read something on the gov.uk site for information regarding asylum for Vietnamese people, apparently there's a serious problem there with loansharks, so maybe this is part of that?

If loansharks are threatening your family, then what choice do you have? But those messages they sent seemed so hopeful, in a sad manner since they were choking to death, doesn't really square up with being enslaved. I do hope the police can figure it out and work with Vietnam on their gang problem.

Well not necessarily, you don't just get let in because you have some savings... you might get let in temporarily because you want to study here etc.. but as pointed out by someone else int he thread it seems one of the victims had already been deported after having exhausted that option.

In some cases yes, in others they have actually stumped up the money - there is a growing middle class in various Asian and African countries. These aren't all poor/desperate people, some of them are reasonably well off by their country's standards and have financial motivations in coming here.

Things might have changed over the years but my brother emigrated to Australia 20 years ago with just 50k and a job at that end. No problem what so ever. If they really did have 30K to blow I guess the child is reasonably well educated and could find something of substance here for work.

What i was getting at is you do not really need anything solid to get asylum. We had a really nice gent from Iraq working for us a few years ago. His family were in no harm what so ever as he came from a mountain region but because his country was at war he got in. He worked very hard and ended up taking his winnings home and retiring early!

I’m pretty sure that doesn’t cut it either here or there anymore. Aus, Can, NZ is a bit different if you’re British and under 30 or so... can get a 2 year visa which allows you to work for half the time. Could then perhaps find a way of staying via an employee sponsoring, marriage etc...

Generally getting into a country via having money requires more like six or seven figures depending on the country. No idea re: the UK as I’ve not checked.

I doubt many actually believe they will be caught ever.

Even if they are caught the chance of them ever being repatriated is extremely small. Very few ever are. Once they're here, they're here hence they keep coming and its very profitable for traffickers to keep sending 'em even if afew get caught/end up in the news because something went wrong and the nation goes into collective hand wringing mode.

Ok heres the truth of the matter. Our lowest standard of living here is substantially better than that of African or Asian countries where the best some can hope for, if they aren't lucky enough to have a tourist industry, is some hell hole tuna processing factory. Even working in nail bars is a significant career upgrade.

Once in the UK a female who gets pregnant is automatically entitled to indefinite leave to remain as border force will never send a pregnant woman home or a mother with a UK born child. The father is also treated favourably and seldom deported.

Once they get out of being an illegal then it's free education, healthcare and associated benefits. We may not view these as luxuries but to a majority of the world with zero welfare it's paradise and well worth 20k overall.

Have you seen the photos of some of the involved (prior)? I don't think they were hurting for cash, but maybe that's just sensationalism at play.
