39 Bodies found in Lorry in Essex

The sentencing for this stuff seems pretty low... as per usual I guess.

The Dutch driver of the lorry, Perry Wacker, was jailed for 14 years in April 2001 for the manslaughter of the immigrants, who had paid a criminal gang thousands to be smuggled into the UK.

Seven men were later jailed by a Dutch court for their role in the human-smuggling operation.

An inquest heard how the 58 immigrants banged frantically on the inside of the container as their air supply ran out.

Like presumably out in 7 years then... if he was complicit in it, shutting off their air supply then that is a bit more than just not checking a Lorry. Really ought to be at least double that sentence if not life - took the lives of dozens of people after being deliberately reckless.

Would be nice if this current care attracts a bigger sentence if deliberate.

Interesting comments on the photo of the police car, both by him and the recent one...

might or might not be, but in this area his comment would be local banter.
However, the recent comment must have took some scanning back for someone to make that statement

In this case, the previous one, i wonder how the inquest heard that people heard frantic banging as their air supply ran out, yet no one managed to restore the air supply, it was hardly the driver who told them...

Two people survived! In part because the others had died earlier and so there was just enough left to support them.

dunno if I'm getting mixed up...if the truck's used commercially (hire and reward) and it's registed private (horsebox, amateur racing etc) then if you ever get stopped by VOSA it's game over?
I would assumes private means an owner driver/operator rather than a larger commercial operation like say Stobart or whoever.

If it was registered as private - i.e. not used for hire or reward but used for that then the owner is indeed Royally screwed.

Damn - some of the comments, people don't exactly hold back with this stuff.

I do wonder - with stuff like this - would it not be possible for someone to volunteer up their social media in order to shut it down/temp remove it etc.. in custody - on one hand the police might want to take a keen interest in it on the other hand you don't really need it open to the whole world when there is so much attention focused on the suspect.

example person making inappropriate comment - put in spoiler tags

'trampers' literally stay in their truck away from home and take jobs where the work is...so not unusual

yeah must be owner/driver type situation otherwise it would have been mentioned on the news surely...just my interpretation of 'private' confusing me!

Is it normal for a cab driver to drive all the way from NI to London to pick up a truck for a.job?
Not at all, this would have been one of many many trailer movements he's told / contracted / whatever to do, he probably leaves home on a Sunday night and gets back (if at all) the following Saturday having moved many many different loads all over the U.K. and beyond.

People often assume a truck picks up from point A, delivers to point B, and then goes home.

We wish! :p

Back onto the topic itself though - It ought to be fairly trivial to fit cameras to the rear of a truck or indeed inside them - I wonder if in future if the migrant issue continues they should just start fitting them and have to provide an audit.
