I’m sorry to admit that ambivalence is my overriding emotion here.
I'm certainly not happy that these people have lost their lives, neither though am I saddened by it tbh.
A harsh view to take but here’s why....
They (the 39 deceased) will have covered countless countries before ending up here, plenty of other opinions for safe places to try first instead they wanted to get to the U.K. and have paid a high price for that desire.
Had they wanted to they could have been still alive - but safe from whatever they were fleeing - in say France for example.
If the fridge was running then they’d have died from exposure (they can easily reach-25c if set to freeze) and with it being a refrigerated trailer, even if it was switched off they would still have suffocated due to them being airtight.
Sad for those involved of course, I’m just surprised this doesn’t happen more often tbh.
Not surprised the driver was arrested, 39 corpses in the back of your wagon isn’t going to result in anything else, I doubt he’s involved directly with the traffickers, he’s just the poor sod sent to get a trailer sent over by ferry.
RIP.
