3D is overrated

No it really isn't... 3D is a choice that makes commercial and artistic sense and is neither a fad nor a gimmick.3D is here to stay, like it or not.
The beauty is of course that you have a choice to watch 2D if you so wish.

Errr, yeah it is a gimmick / fad. I don't remember it being around too long previously to it's latest Reincarnation.

This I agree with, however new bulbs, new projectors and brighter gamma at post production level should sort this problem out

No. 3D makes films darker.

Errrrrrrrr,no it isn't. It not being around too long previously was down to lack of Studio support and theatre owners unwilling to invest in second projectors. The films,as 'few-ish' as there were, actually did make money.

This time the industry is overwhelmingly behind it,the cinema chains are investing in digital projectors and now there's also a home 3D market that is growing nicely and helping the format along.
This time 3D isn't going anywhere... wanna put a 100 quid on it?

No. 3D makes films darker.

Yes,OLDER GENERATIONS OF PROJECTORS AND FAILURE TO RAISE GAMMA AT POST-PRODUCTION LEVEL DO SO.....

However, this is being worked on and will be solved sooner rather than later.

3d is a gimmick to make punters pay more, it adds absolutely nothing to and takes quality from a film, it can't die fast enough for my liking.

Honestly haven't noticed any "darkness" in all the 3D films I've seen. Admittedly that is just two, Avatar and Prometheus.

Avatar was a Real3D multiplex and it gave me major eyestrain and a headache. But it was worth it at the time. A lot of the strain was caused by Avatar's environment being so beautiful. There would be stuff floating around that you'd want to look at but your eyes could never actually focus on it.

Prometheus was IMAX 3D (at the BFI) and it was just as stunning as Avatar, maybe more so (it seemed more real). And the bonus was that at no point did I get eyestrain and no headache! At no point did I feel distracted from what the camera was focused on, which I think really helped minimise any eyestrain.

It makes me wonder if 3D is quite sensitive to how it is setup or tuned at the cinema...

I take it not many on here have 3D tv's then?

A specifically made for 3D source (Avatar, several PS3 games, Shrek movies etc) looks excellent on my Samsung ES8000 (active 3D)... although anything converted from 2D looks pretty ropey.

I must admit I do get a little eye strain with active 3D (passive is much better in that respect) but personally I'd like there to be more 3D content about!

I don't have a 3D TV, but Avatar 3D at Birmingham Imax blew my mind. Can't wait to see Prometheus in 3D.

People wishing it would die a death...why exactly, when you can just go and see it in 2D instead?

Saw Prometheus in 3D and it was totally awesome, the glasses was fine, totally forgot I was wearing them as I got into the movie. It didn't make the movie darker or anything and the effects was totally stunning, flying through the clouds, the HUD, smoke and rocks, was awesome.

If you don't like 3D, don't watch a flim in 3D, other then that, only other thing I can think that you don't like 3D is because it makes your brain hurt, eyes hurt or you just have bad eyes. LOL

I've seen Tron, Avatar and Green Lantern in 3d and think the fact that it is 3d compliments it.

Been to see a few movies in 3d at the cinema and never been a fan. Can't see the fascination tbh. Much prefer 2d.

A few of the films i've seen in 3d are Beowulf, Avatar and Tron. Plus a few others i can't think of at the mo. And every time i've found the 3d very distracting and it's ruined the movie experience for me.

I literally just returned from watching Prometheus in 3D, my first movie ever in 3D and I am pretty sure the last. It darkened the viewing experience, I may as well have watched in a pair of sun glasses. Totally distracted from what was going on.

Totally not worth it for the few moments when 3D actually worked.

I've seen afew now in 3D and I agree, however saying that I think Avatar was absolutely incredible in 3D, prometheus looked good in 3D but it wasn't as good as the 3D in Avatar.

No,not really since I was hoping you could come up with valid reasons and such to support your stance in a convincing way.

Well, what do you want? It doesn't add immersion and is invariably distracting. The picture quality is diminished because the image is darker. I note that you appear to have said that this is due to poor calibration - guess what, I don't care that theatres can't set up a 3D film properly when they manage just fine with 2D.

I guess i was expecting too much from you. :)

Whoa, Internet badass over here. 59 posts in a year and you crawl out from under your rock to defend 3D? Best of luck making your mark.

Surprised so many people get headaches, have watched loads in 3D, haven't had the slightest pain in my head.

It depends partly on the person and partly on if the director of the film is an idiot when it comes to 3d.
A lot of directors when using 3d (especially early ones) forget that the fast action shot changes whilst ok in 2d can cause eye strain quite easily in 3d, especially if you're older, as the human eye isn't really meant to change focus greatly, rapidly and repeatedly for prolonged periods of time (so directors who love the "change shot every 5 seconds" in 2D have to learn not to do that too much).

Personally I'm fairly meh about 3d, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and I hate the glasses (they're uncomfortable for me), which is why I'm going to watch Promethious tomorrow most likely in 2d.
