Ok, having just built this machine I was wondering what it was capable of.

my kit is as follows
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTO 512mb
Gigabyte 965P-S3 mobo
2gig of crucial PC5300

this was my results

now, can someone just explain what this all means? as I've just got back from work and my brain is fried :) taa

and also if this is a pants result, what do i do to get things quicker?the card is overclocked from stock, and I havn't a clue how to overclock so I wouldn't like to havea go myself, but i can fiddle with settings is someone tells me how to do it:)

Futuremark website has a comparison option, have a look at that and see how your system stacks up against similar rigs

Theres a sticky at the top of this forum with o/c tips and all the info u might need ;)

ok well there's one guy who ive just foound with exactly the same gear as me, except i have the overclocked 7900GT and he has the standard.

however his FSB on his mobo is 450Mhz as opposed to my 266Mhz

also there's this
......................... mine.................... his
CPU Name.......... 2136 MHz...........3597 MHz
CPU String........Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz

I don't know about the CPU name thingm but thats saying to me he's done something. Putting two and two together I'm presuming thats linked to the FSB (whatever that is) !!!

I'm so confused and I still have no idea what I'm looking at? but what i do know is that even though we've got the same gear he's running his pc faster..
help!!!!!

He has just overclocked his CPU mate. (rather heavily, I might add)

btw: What part of norwich you from?

what advantage would I get from doing that, and is it relitively (sp) safe , well as safe as overclocking may be?

would I notice that bigger difference in performance if i done that?

at the end of the day I've just spend a shed load of cash on my new pc, and want to get my moneys worth out of it

hehe, I have a friend who lives in mulbarton, she sometimes works in the pub when she's not at uni. small world :)

so what do you think to my post above about the cpu, or getting the most out of my comp?

My current results :-

3dmark score - 4855
SM2.0 Score - 1999
HDR/SM3.0 Score - 1951
CPU Score - 1773

My results are higher than yours across the board - OK my card is overclocked but I would have expected your CPU score to be higher than mine.

Well, your ram is rated at 667mhz which is... around 340mhz (I think, I always get confused with ram speeds!), meaning that techincally if cooling and cpu and mobo allows, you could run at 2.7ghz, without running the ram faster than it should!

OCing these days is almost totally safe due to thermal limiting.

Unfortunatly your mobo isn't a great clocker from what I've heard... but you should be able to manage at least some, with some decent cooling on the CPU, for example, an artic cooler Freezer 7 pro would cool down your CPU and make it almost silent for around 20 notes.

ok well not knowing anything about overclocking at all, would i get a noticeable difference fromfrom games etc by overclocking the cpu (i presume this would also have something to do with the FSB)

also isit easy to do as I havn't a clue in all honesty

For the love of god, hook the guy up with a guide :D

The GTO for a start will easily overclock without trouble. The cpu, I'm no expert on Intel but it should be possible and relatively easy. The whole process is relatively simple once you know, and practice makes perfect. I remember when I first started overclocking a few years ago and I had noooooo idea what the hell anything was or did. Someone was trying to give me advice and I was like ... "what the hell does that mean!". Your best bet is to get a really clear guide that tells you word for word what to do, so you dont blow anything up. In other words, if you dont mind the expression, a "Dummies Guide". (not a book mind you) Just google it, or hope some kind soul here can dig something up.

I'd give you detailed instructions myself, but I gotta head off now. I'm sure someone here can help.

Oh and PS: I have the GTO too, I love it.

Yo, I have the GTO too - it rocks.

My system for comparison:

Asrock DS-II
A64 3000+ @2.4Ghz
2 GB DDR400
7900GTO 700 core 800 memory

3d06: 5186

Your GPU score in 3d06 seems low.

IMO you need to download and install Coolbits 2.0 (google). Open up the overclocking panel the nvidia control panel and press 'find optimal'. If that works, then try 700 on the core and 800 on the memory.

That should get your score up.

ok ill give that a try, next thing how does the mark that you get, correspond on a poor to great scale is there such a thing and what would you consider a good mark?

Well I got 6200 (approx / see specs below)

3dmark 06 is currently the highest requiring benchmarking software until 07 comes out. It will make any system sweat. My old rig got only 2200 so your setup is still good.

Another example, the most top end systems available today get 10-13000 points. People who spend crazy amounts to get the cutting edge. I'd say as long as you have over 4000 you have an ok rig good enough to run any game. If you want absolute smooth performance, you really wanna get over the 7500 mark, but you'd need to spend several hundred pounds per part.

ok so, I've just tried to install the coolbits option. it didn't bring anything new on the display properties. So I uninstalled all nvidia drivers with driver cleaner pro.

The installed the latest nvidia drivers 91.47 forceware. then installed the coolbits hack.

nothing again, am i doing something really stupid?

this is just the thing, i go right click on desktop> properties>settings>advanced and there is only general/adapter/monitor/troubleshoot/colour management/geforce 7900GT/GTO, of which the geforce 7900GT/GTO has got not a lot in it apart from a button that says start the NVIDIA control panel, which is to do with the nvidia drivers, but no coolbits part to it
