Another week and Vita is doing even worse, they desperately need new, good games.

Again Sony throwing "look how powerful this device is compare to our competitors” in the consumers face without support it a good wave of software.

At least Nintendo learnt their lesson by changing the 3DS marketing strategy, reducing the price of the console and releasing their first party titles quicker.

Indeed it's all well and good having all the power but if you don't have the software it's about as useful as a brick.

A friend pointed out to me yesterday that if the Vita doesn't reach 5 million worldwide units by the end of the year it will have failed to match the Atari lynx :p I bet Sony are doing everything possible to avoid that :p

If it does fail. Would Sony suddenly just stop supporting it?

Given the cuts at the corporation recently, it's not out of the question. However, it's going to look pretty bad on their behalf if they call time on the system, I'm sure they would rather it slowly fade into obscurity through lack of sales and games released.

The Lynx sold 5m in 5 years though, not in one year.

I dare say if the lynx had sold 5m in its first year it would have been a success.

Sony dont really have a habit of abandoning things though, there is also a lot of scope to reduce cost even if its at a big loss before deciding on its long term fate.

The Lynx sold 5m in 5 years though, not in one year.

It sold the majority of that 5 million (over 4 million) in the first year though, its initial sales were very good because it was the only colour handheld in existence and it had much better performance than the Gameboy, but 13 months after it launched Sega released the Game Gear and the Lynx was dead.

Sales went through the floor overnight as the GG was more powerful and built up an amazing games library pretty much straight from launch. Atari slashed prices to try and compete but sales continued to drop as anybody who wanted a cheap handheld with cool games bought the GB and those who wanted to spend a bit more for colour and more power bought the GG.

Sony dont really have a habit of abandoning things though.

*cough* Betamax *cough* Laserdisc *cough* PSP Go *cough* Mylo *cough* Digital Audio Tape :p I was tempted to say Minidisc but that took quite a while to fail.

Pretty sure the gamegear was not more powerful, having owned both at the time, the Lynx certainly produced the better graphics.

Betamax/Laserdisc/ both lasted years too. I didnt think laserdisc was sony though.

Are there any decent games out for the Veta yet other than the few decent launch titles?

It is amazing how these companies usually always seem to put out such a limited range of quality titles at launch or soon after - you'd think that would be a given to ensure the system's success.

Bit of a necro, but the situation is getting worse and worse and Japan is pretty much where handhelds do best.

The thing is there still isn't a title that will sell consoles, Gravity Rush is great, and Uncharted is decent but until we get a mega release it will continue to struggle. People seem to be using them more for PSP games than anything else at the moment. You could argue a case for the MGS HD Collection but it's only 2 & 3 and it has been out on console for a while anyway.
