£4000 spec

One thing you might want to do if find out what case he wants. One guy thinks a solid block of steel looks sexy while your average internet millionaire (geek, young, rich) wants it to have lazerz n L337 fanz n shiz. (translation, lights, fans, make the lights change colour etc).

£4k? Does that include your fee?

Decent quality monitor, Decent well specced SSD, plus whatever the best graphics cards are by the time it's built. In my mind all I can see is if for general usage, go for a reasonably good chip with a wacking great air cooler and overclock it to a safe reliable level. I'd be thinking one of the better i5's or a lower end i7 ?

When does he want it by?

Lol this is fun. Droooool. My take on it is if someone's wasting this money on a PC they want something to show for it (show off to others more like). Needs some wow factor. Has to be 3-monitor eyefinity for me. Expensive/quality look to all components are very important (LOL at the MX518 :) ), as well as a cohesive theme to the whole system. This build has red/black colour scheme going on throughout down to the keyboard backlight and mouse...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

if he wants something that won't go wrong, crossfire isn't what you want tbh.

what are you charging him for your services btw

For the SSD, take a good look at the new OCZ Revodrives, awesome read and write speeds.

I'm not convinced that a single 30" screen is necessarily a good thing. How far away from the screen are you going to have to sit to be able to take in everything? I'd sooner go for 3x 24" or even 1x27" and 2 24" screens with thin bezels.

I'm suprised with all the recommendations for OCZ memory and SSDs in this thread. For such a high budget you should be looking at Corsair RAM and either an Intel or corsair SSD.
Widely known as the best.
OCZ are widely known for a cheaper option and (unfortunatly) for failing.
As for the Revo PCI-E drive that is a great drive on paper and on paper only NOT for real world use or for long term health/speed. No Trim support on those drives as they are Raid and there is very little chance of them releasing an alternative to Trim via firmware so they may well be great out of the box but they will not perform well over any period of time. They are simply made to look good on paper.

For the SSD, take a good look at the new OCZ Revodrives, awesome read and write speeds.

This a common mistake made when looking at SSD's. Read and write speeds are VERY misleading when it comes to SSD's. Those speeds make up only a small part of an actual SSD's performance.

For 4k you shouldn't have anything made by OCZ in your clients system. Harsh I know but we are talking top end spec here folks and top OCZ are not. (they do have good support tho to be fair to them)

A client wants to spend 4k on a build.... NP:

Intel Xeon X5560 £950 right there.

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 well there is another £350

why not a Asus Ares ATI Radeon Dual HD 5870 easy place to lose 800 green queens.

RAM.....why not 2x Corsair Dominator GT 6GB £400 well spent....

All your cliant wants to do is throw good money away that in less than a year will be 1/2 the price.

Unless you have a use for a certain spec then overspending will only get you robbed.

Tell the tard to get real.

And if he is so stupid as to spend so much without a valid reason tell him to buy a decent TV to output it to. A 55" led will help make it more worthwhile.

Still a tard though.

So true....a layman, so no overclocking or water.....LOL for 4k I would want it cooled by fairies blowing on it and it overclocked but 200% at least.

Why do AMD call it crossfire?

'cause you'll be angry (cross) enough when you realize the problems!

*joke BTW, don't everyone start a lynch mob! :p

Lol - is it really that bad?!

I had a go on a 3-monitor eyefinity setup and it was an amazing experience. You're only adding peripheral vision for sooo much money when you think about it, but the sense of immersion was awesome - much better than 3D which I found uncomfortable and gimmicky. To be honest it ruined single-monitor gaming for me :)! If I was dropping 4k on a build I'd want that sort of wow factor. I'd be peeved if I got 1 lousy monitor :). That's why I think these suggestions blowing the budget on an SR2 with two Xeons are ridiculous imho.

So is there an Nvidia equivalent to a three-monitor eyefinity setup? Cos I'd just as well have put a couple of 480s in instead of the 5870s if tri-fire is really so poo. But look at the colour scheme, man! Those 5870s look sweet in there! :) To be honest someone wanting to spank 4k on a PC who can't even spec/build it himself will be waaay more impressed with three colour scheme matched cards in there than two 480s :p

Anyway - can't take it too seriously - thread's a windup, right? ;)
