Lol yeah I wasn't paying much attention for the cooler I was just looking for one that lit up :P

Thanks for the help.
Its been quite an education searching for a £4000 system. And not as hard to find as i thought it would be.
OCUK has one and other companies have stuff double that price. So it must mean that this guy is hardly unique and there is a market for stupidly expensive PC's.
And its turned out its not even for him, its for his wife.

So i've written up a few specs for him based on suggestions here and he'll be back later this week he said to go through them with me.

But yeah something fancy looking could be the order of the day. His old PC had those ram slots with flashing LED's. can't seem to find them anymore.

For 4k you shouldn't have anything made by OCZ in your clients system. Harsh I know but we are talking top end spec here folks and top OCZ are not. (they do have good support tho to be fair to them)

OCZ Revodrives are fantastic, I have one and it destroys all other SSDs. If he was suggesting OCZ Gold RAM then maybe I would agree but OCZ have very good hardware (Reaper, Blade, Vertex etc).

Back on topic. Sorry I missed the OS and monitor, keyboard etc part so I kinda just waded in.

When spending £4K on a system it is easy to get carried away but even with that amount of money you can make the wrong choices and buy hardware that you won't need/use.

For your clients needs, the suggestion of the Ultima Carbon is a fantastic one. If you wanted to save some notes you could always change the CPU to the i7 970 over the i7 980X. This would save around £150 which would be money better spent on keyboards, mice or even a soundcard if thats what floats his boat.

Generally for a setup of this magnitude you want these things:

- SLI or Xfire (if he intends to game a lot, if not stick with a single high end GPU solution)
- SSD and storage drive (SSDs are the biggest upgrade you will ever make as they add a ridiculous amount of speed plus a storage drive for extra data files etc)
- i7 CPU (preferably 6 core considering he wants it for a long time)
- High end sound card (very dependant on user's needs but very nice nonetheless)
- Future proof mobo (this comes in the form of USB3 and SATA 6GB/s meaning that your user will be ready to upgrade to the latest storage mediums as and when.)
- Good cooling (Megahalem or H70 are perfect for cooling high end systems and good for users who don't want the hassle of a full water loop inside their PC)
- Finally a case (got to have enough space to be upgraded/expanded but has to be practical, 800D is perfect for this)

I think these are a few good pointers to follow. Hope this helps.

Go chat to the wife and find out what she wants it for AND if the husband will use it.

Also, do find out if it's an 'upto' £4k rather than MUST spend £4k :-)

Still think a basic spec would be:

CPU: i7
CPU Cooling: If it's not being overclocked, use stock cooler, if it is, then something big and efficient - plenty suggestions in this thread. If you go SLI, you DEFINATELY want to overclock the CPU!
MotherBoard: Any Intel X58
Graphics: GTX480 or 480GTX SLI
RAM: 9GB or 12GB.
HDD: SSD for Operating System. Single Large Fast HDD for everything else.
O/S: Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate Retail. (Less if they don't need the features of 'ultimate')
Monitor: AT LEAST 24" and MUST have 1 to 1 pixel mapping option for High def content! Get a decent IPS panel, Probably a Dell. Personally I'd go for at least 1920*1200 rather than only 1080p. If going for 30" then look for 2500 type res's.
Backup: Something they can archive pictures on like a DVD recorder.
Bluray Player: Because if you are spending £4k you will want that.
Mouse: Something non 'gamer', but decent if being used by the wife.
Keyboard: Something Microsoft, wireless. Must be easy to charge, last thing you want is to keep replacing batteries all the time.
Case: Talk to the wife, find out her tastes! Probably best you take a look at her house and where the PC will be located. Last thing you want is a shiny metal bling machine in the centre of classical surroundings.
Soundcard: Semi decent Creative X-fi. You really don't want onboard sound on a £4k machine.

Lastly, budget for

1) Quieter case fans and one's with rubber mountings
2) A case with intake filters or a case that has the option.

Bear in mind maintenance of the system so if the filter gets clogged up the system will be mental hot, especially if running SLI often.

Don't forget to add in the cost of the O/S and any other software they want/need.

You do realise you almost agree with me on his one (see my spec above)! Wouldn't want to do that would you ;) :)

Just uploading a spec now, 2mins

Ok I can't get them to resize now, and cba to fiddle, so i hope 1900x1080 is ok...

Comes to £3767.56
The other ~£230 can be used to buy some red fans, such as Phoyba Nano G-14 Silent Waterproof 140mm 1000RPMFans.
As well as some other bits and bobs, such as sending the case to get a Side Window cut, and red/black cable braiding and cables,
you should make ALL cables red or black braided. Every last one, it'll be fast, have 3 decent monitors for eyefinitey, crossfire options
(2 in crossfire is fine, 3 is where the problems start), a good SSD, Sound card, Surreound Sound, good Peripherals, excellent
motherboard/memory, awesome case, Win7 Ult, sufficient PSU (can get 1000W if you like and still be in budget!), air cooling (you
said you wanted no water or clocking, this is a good option incase he changes his mind), BluRay player, good mouse/keyboard/G13,
and last but not least - it'll all be colour coded and will be look cooler than the fonz!

1 lousy 5870!? :)

A bit pricey for a rig that wont really game any better than your or my rig :p. TN monitors aswell - meh. How'd you manage to spend so much? Oh that case and all that audio gear. I just figured he'd dig-out to his existing expensive hi-fi ;)

A 3 way monitor settup would be much better than 1 Dell ultrasharp IMHO.
Excellent audio, matching colours on everything...
Sure enough, 1 5870 is pretty minimal for a £4k gaming rig, shaving some
money off on the RAM, Case, Speakers and the Sound card would cover that,
without much loss to the actual system. But are any of the other rigs better?

Sure £4k would get you a super fast computer, but skimping out by having
just ONE monitor (no matter how nice), bad sound/keyboard/mouse/looks
would be even worse if you ask me!

Btw, he could always extend the budget slightly for a 5870, or drop one in
later for Xfire, not the end of the world. THEN would 2x 5870 be much worse?

The clients sound like they have no idea what do to with a computer, so they'd
notice a bigger gain using 3monitors, the looks, and brilliant sound than using
2-3 gpus's (3 will barely get used at all, better to buy 2 and drop 1 in a year or
two when it will actually serve a purpose).

Make a pc with £1k. Keep the rest, and share it out with us :).
On a more serious note, I would wait for the 6000 series first before spending anything. Also, maybe add in watercooling? You know he wants that Revodrive!!!

Hey I had 3 ultrasharp IPS monitors and 3 5870's too (I agree 2 would have been more sensible, then buy some more ram and a soundcard instead) in my build above :p I did the whole colour scheme thing too. Hmm you got more red on your mouse - good colour scheming, but mine looks like it's about to transform into a spaceship and fly away, and is still red and black, so I win. :)

Well my own rig is black yellow and everything inbetween, so I was bound to lose from the start :D

I still dont believe this is for real. He wants a £4000 rig for his wife? Is she an avid gamer? He's clearly not an enthusiast or else he would have a bit more of an idea about what he needs and how much it is likely to cost him.

Im sure his wife would prefer a nice trip away and a i7 950, GTX480 system which lets face it, wouldnt be shoddy.
