4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

Which brand mobo did they have on 4760K and which did they change to on 3700X.

And you meant I think i5-4670K.
Yep your right on the CPU name... confusing it with my 4790k I had before.

They went from an ASUS board to an MSI one. Not sure exact models, but believe it was a Z97 to an X570.

Well

According to that thread 4 years old, many feel the 4670K will bottleneck a GeForce RTX 2080.

Even though bottleneck calculator says no.

Very interesting point there. I have definitely seen more coil whine on MSI motherboards than Asus boards though not that bad of whine if at all on mobos though my MSI Z690 Unify X had a slight tick if ear close enough where my current Asus even ear close has almost like none that can be heard.

And I wonder how that plays into GPU coil whine.

@mrmrgaming on Youtube stated they have a modern MSI AMD motherboard for Ryzen 7000 series and they have had nothing but coil whine trouble switching many different cards and using many different PSUs

They never had any luck with any MSI or even Gigabyte nor Zotac, just Gigabyte and Zotac much less bad but still more whine than normal

no whine at all on my MSI x570 ACE board with 3070 Aorus Master and 3090 TUF. Yet to buy a 4090 so can't comment on those, but if anyone wants to lend me one I'll happily test it.

*3070 did whine if FPS went crazy high (several hundred FPS) when I ran a 3dmark laptop test by mistake. Other than that it was fine.

Wait so you have both a 3070 Master and a 3090 Tuf in your MSI X570 ACE board? What CPU and RAM and what speed is RAM at?

And what resolution are you running?

B650 E-E Strix Gaming Wifi, 7600X and BeQuiet Pure Power 1200w. I think originally I had a B550 Tommahawk and a 5800x at the start of the journey.

Which cards did you test in current 7600X system before the current quiet Suprim X? Like how many of the 4 Suprim X cards? You went through 9 right including a Gaming OC and PNY which both had annoying whine though Gaming OC half of what the other bad Suprim X cards you had were while PNY a little worse.

And did you upgrade form 5800X to 7600X to swap parts to try and eliminate RTX 4090 coil whine or did you want platform upgrade or both? Did you put 7600X in as a place holder while waiting for 7800X3D to be released or for availability of 7950X3D? Or are you going to stick with 7600X?

No, I'm just running the 3090 atm. the 3070 is sat back in its box for now. I'm only on 2x1080p so it's not being taxed too much. I was about to buy a new screen but then finances went to cack. 3900x at stock +4x8GB 3600MHz cL16 ram. I should probably tweak the thing but having a baby destroys time (and concentration)

I thought this is the thread to compete which card can whine the loudest….

RTX 9090TI-XXX powered - needs an ICE to provide 900HP of juice. Thus 9090TI
intel have been preparing for this for some time ;)

source: in case anyone forgot the stunt they tried when they couldn't match AMD's Threadripper2 + Ryzen 3000 series.

So I picked up a Rog strix 4080 a few weeks back.. stuck a EK water block on it and the coil whine is audible but I have an open air case so to be expected but its much worse than my 3080.

It seems to get worse dependant on the game, for instance Warzone is audible but managble where as RDR2 is really loud.

I assume its coming from the back side of the card... would there be any issue to take the backplate of to test for a few mins? someone suggested it could be the thermal pads so want to try that.

@Hostile_18

Are you sure your power supply is Be Quiet Pure Power 1200W?

Per Be Quiet website at link above, they only have a PurePower 11 and PurePower 12 series PSUs and none of them go any higher than 1000W which is Pure Power 12. Pure power 11 series maxes out at 700W.

Bequiet Straight Power 11 1200w its on Amazon.

I honestly don't think it's anything other than the cards with these machines though.

I think you are probably right but me after trying so many Gaming OCs with so may reporting no whine and all having a buzzing/whine from the coils, my only hope is to try a different system configuration.

Or maybe I have just been super unlucky. Maybe need to try your route and just go and get MSI Suprim X 4090 and keep returning until I find a quiet one. I have only tried one Suprim X thus far.

Thanks! I really hope nothing goes wrong with this one! Did a quick mess about and this one can do 2820 on 80% power limit.

Ok awesome another silent Suprim X. Is your system 7700X and mobo X670-E Asus something like in your sig. What resolution do you game at? What power supply.

Starting to see a possible trend of AMD Ryzen 7000 systems with mid range to high end Asus boards being better setups for whine free RTX 4090s?? Coincidence or something to it?

I think that was my third or fourth. One gigabyte for thermals not coilwhine.

That is an interesting take on things considering the retailer I use accepts it for that with no quibble.

Wait so yo0u had a Gigabyte you sent back for thermals not coil whine? Was it just as quiet as the current Suprim X you got and seem to be lucky with?

Edit I see a post 1 month back 0 whine/buzz in RDR2 with quiet case fans with Gaming OC that had to go back due to thermals. I see system specs in sig being Ryzen 7700X and Asus X670-E mobo. What power supply do you have? And I assume nothing else changed in the last month between quiet Gaming OC and lucky quiet Suprim X?

Is one of you using a surge protector or such like? What motherboards are you each using and what is the power delivery system on them?

Yes need much more data on this as this is extremely important to try and find the right combo that will work with a supposedly good sample 4090 card.

Just motherboard listed is enough and we can lookup power delivery system to see if there is a trend with certain ones.

Sig is exact, I have an EVGA P6 1000w.

I went Suprim, Suprim, Giga, Suprim. This was whine, whine, thermals, SUCCESS. I run 1440UW or 4K, no difference in noise to either tbh. I couldn't speculate on the board contributing to whine and I guess in my experience it doesn't make sense as 2 were awful. The Suprim isn't as quiet buzz wise as the Giga but it's like difference of couldn't hear GIG with ear to case, and can hear the Suprim maybe 1 inch away but I don't sit that close so I don't hear it.
