4080 & 4090 Coil Whine Thread

And yup worst fear was realized. Local Micro Center flagged me for too many returns of video cards even before I had the chance to try another Suprim X. I was lucky and able to make last return of the one I had in addition to a bad DDR5 XMP Intel board in system switch up to attempt to eliminate coil whine (Yes Intel system DDR5 XMP on Asus boards nothing but a disaster for me and even BIOS update which I was hoping would fix it actually made it worse) Apparently their return policy leeway got stricter almost overnight and you cannot return more than a few $1000s at most without being banned or they saw me with too many cards. And shamefully they refuse to do a restocking fee which would be fair. Its all or nothing with them. You cannot even return unopened items if you are banned. If you are not flagged, you can return anything willy nilly, or at least they want you to think that until they friggin flag and ban you for the slightest whiff at it. And no I could not try the Suprim X 4090 to see if it was one of the lucky quiet ones as I had not gotten to it yet and when flagged I had an hour to go home and get it and only could return it as last return until store closing, so did not have time nor want to take risk that it was not quiet one (Which most BTW are not even new revision, just maybe 1 out every 4 or 5 at most????), then be stuck with something I cannot return and have to sell. Yes I would have been ok financially, though a little hit to wallet and also the hassle of having to sell it and wasted time and not just because or mostly there is a loss to selling them.

Shame on NVIDIA and AIBs for telling us coil whine is normal while marketing these cards as having quiet fans and lying to us trying to pretend there is no other noise!! And shame on some retailers for putting up with it and lying about return policies and not accepting restocking fees which would be very fair.

Ok, so to update..... things have changed a bit... RDR2, we all know this game is the best for testing coil whine. It was BAD. Cyberpunk, was BAD, Whitcher3, BAD, Diablo BAD. So... I ran MSI afterburner and set a fan curve. RDR2, barely noticible, Cyberpunk, I had to have my ear at the case to hear it. Witcher3, dissappeared completely. Diablo, tiny tiny bit but I think I'm imagining it. I did the same for the Gaming X Trio and it didnt make a difference, did it with the Suprim and its got so much better, I really dont understand it. I dont have any computer sound on and I have the Lian Li uni fans that are simply brilliant so everything is already very very quiet so nothing is being drowned out.

While I'm firmly in the 'there should be no coil whine camp', especially at the current prices, but the problem is you can test a gpu in the factory and get no coil whine but as soon as it's plugged into a pc you could get coil whine.

All it takes is for a small variance in the way the power is supplied compared with testing and you could end up triggering coil whine, some reports even say a simulated sine wave ups (cheaper ones basically) can cause it. In the past we've said change the psu as a solution, we've had suggestions of playing around with power draw and we don't even need to say how 'unreliable' the uk power supply infrastructure is these days.... essentially there's a lot of variables that could trigger it but I'd say the biggest issue is manufacturers cheapening out on the hardware which you could argue is due to the tiny margins that Nvidia (and AMD) are forcing onto board partners.

As far as I am aware, you can use coils that dont vibrate. So I'd say you're spot on with the testing method, but all manufacturers should be using better coils.

Can any of the regular visitors to this thread advise if there has been any kind of conclusion on whether any particular cards are less likely to be affected, or is it pretty much pot luck?

Sorry, I realise this could be seen as slightly lazy, but as there are almost 850 posts I'd need to wade through I thought I'd ask. Just in the market for a 4090 for my new build.

afaik its pot luck and entirely subjective to each person

Finally got a Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 4090 and a Thermaltake ToughPower GF3 1200 Watt ATX 3 PSU and by far the quietest coil whine/buzz ever that it is like not audible at all even in quiet room with sound turned off with PC case under my desk only 3-5 feet from me. Only can hear some l whine/buzz if I put ear within a couple inches of case otherwise hear almost nothing when under load when siting at desk case below it in quiet room with quiet fans.

Finally I did it.

Perhaps it was the power supply with excellent ripple suppression combined with native 12VHPWR connector.

I had tried the MSI A1000G ATX 3.0 with the native 12VHPWR connector before and it did not make any difference. It had good but not great ripple suppression per ARix review.. Perhaps great ripple suppression with the native 12VHPWR connector was the difference or maybe I just got a diamond Gaming OC 4090 or both??

But finally the wait and journey is is over.

SO happy!!

I’ve only had my Asus 4090 ROG stix for about two weeks had no noise from it.
since today when ever im in game get a buzzing noise from it in menus it stops jump back in game starts again. Some games is louder than others only one that didn’t do it so far was overwatch 2. Not sure if I should return as still under the 30 days or pray it goes away?

The strix seems to be one of the worst offenders. Whether you can live with the buzzing should it not clear up, is up to you!

I have an ASUS TUF and its loud. Coil whine on menus and when playing spiderman and Cyberpunk. Can't hear it with audio on but then again my sound system is pretty loud.

Any point gambling with the TUF OC? I need 2x HDMI 3x display port so I can't move to gigabyte

I had 3 strix 4090s and a strix 4080 and they all had coil whine. The one currently in my machine is super loud like you would not belive. still not as bad as the strix 3090ti LC I had though. The only 4090's I had that had no coil whine was the zotacs. Both suprim X's had coil whine but not to the same extent as the Strix.

I have sent back so many 4090's due to whine that I no longer have the time and it cost me a small fortune in shipping costs. Having Said that OCUK were amazing about it.

Now I have just given up and waiting on the 4090Ti/5090.

Given my experience of high end Asus Strix cards Next iteration of the 4xxx/5xxx series I will be choosing another vendor..

My Asus TUF OC 4090 has been great from the get go, marginal coil whine, but anything upto 500w load for the gpu is very quiet, was playing jedi survivor a few nights ago, 4k epic settings and heard a slight buz but nothing major, card spiked to 582w but returned back to 448w, got to 69c under water which seems hot but all case fans were sub 1000rpm, whole pc was very quiet, using corsair 600w atx 3.0 cable.

a few games have had crashing issues but after a long and tedious journey i have found workarounds for most of my games, destiny still plays up every now and then, but much better than before, again coil whine for my other games is next to nothing, must have got lucky
