4870X2 - support thread

Bit better with CD drivers in terms of avg and max FPS, but min fps is still dodgy:

Furmark v1.4 Fullscreen
Score: 5991
FPS Min:29
FPS Max131
FPS Avg:100
Time: 60000ms
Res: 1280x1024 / MSAA: 0x
Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Active GPUs: 2
Drivers: Unknown version
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4Ghz
CPU Speed: 3825MHz (actually 3.4Ghz)
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (64)

although GPUZ still reports one core in use only

When I was installing the drivers the screen went blank and didn't come back, but I just hit RETURN after a while and it rebooted (so I guess the screen had the "Changes made to system require a reboot" dialog box. I assume this is ok.

This is on the drivers provided on the CD, no overclocking of any kind.

Note: This is on my Asus P5W64 which is a PCI-E 1.0a motherboard, just to let anyone who is considering buying this card - it works fine, and there is negligible performance loss.

Have any of you managed to do any Witcher tests? For me, it's no quicker than my 8800gtx and I'm having to play in 1920x1200 as I did with the gtx.
According to the reviews, this card should be smashing through this at 2560x1600, everything on max at 70 odd fps.
I can only think it could be a driver problem - but then again, what drivers did the review sites use?
edit - If I have two instances of gpuz running, one for each core, it looks like one gpu is about 40% load in game, and the other about 10% or less. I'm guessing this might explain why it seems to be running with the performance of a single 4870 card.

Well - can only hope the next driver revision sorts this out.

Will try some different games/tests tomorrow.

The temp differences are due to the position of the cores on the board. Since there are two cores, one closer to the fan, one to the grill, ATI opted to make one of cores' heatsinks copper, the other one Aluminium. This has wierded up the temps i think.

Anyone tried audiosurf?

The whole game is messed up, flickering in the menu and no track in game.

This is in both normal and cfx mode.

Not got that one mate, but thought I'd add something positive to this thread before I go to sleep.
Guru3d reported an fps of 88 in the devil may cry 4 benchmark @ 2560x1600 with 8xAA.
I tried this with same settings and got an average of 114 fps across the four tests.

Hmm, interesting. I've not got around to installing the Vista 64 drivers yet.

I'll have to check it out tomorrow as I'm on the lappy at the mo + I'm well tired.

My temp is 80c idle, and it goes down to 74c with the case side on (it has a massive fan on it). But i honestly dont care aslong as it works fine, which it does.

And with all this "Disabled Adapter" and "linked Adapter" shouldn't that be for if you have a second monitor connected? I have dual displays and mine says linked.

Thought I'd post my furmark bench. I get almost EXACTLY the same as D3lirious' result above, and as we have the same CPU at 3.4, I guess it's nice to know that things are consistent! My motherboard (Abit ip35) is also PCIE 1.0a.

I think the minimum of 29 is when the test first loads as it shoots up to around the 100 mark pretty quick.
This is using drivers on the CD (powercolor card), no overclock on the 4870x2.

Looks like it's performing as it should then. I had major trouble with this card when I got it on Thursday, but I think it's all ok now. Games are flying, but Crysis results seem all over the place, and that's really annoying me.

I ended up reinstalling vista too. And weirdly, that seems to be running worse than it was before. Takes ages to boot up and seems more sluggish than it was. Does it take 'prefetch' a week or so to get up to speed does anyone know?

That's what I thought but it still says adapter disabled with both my Dell and Yuraku hooked up, I wonder if it only says "linked" under Vista installs?

I'm not too fussed really as long as my games are working as they should, which they are.

I still need to get around to sorting my Vista install out though.

Not much headroom for overclocking as far as I can tell in this card, don't think I'll even need to bother with Rivatuner. Overclocked both cores to 800/900 (default 750/900) in CCC and re-ran Furmark and got:

Haven't found the limits of memory clock yet, tried Auto-Tune and it gave me settings which were producing artifacts on screen. :(

I don't like the thought that one of the cores is over 80 degrees C idle, but I guess AMD know best when it comes to the tolerances of these chips.

Also tried Bioshock out today and that worked like a charm (70/80 fps).
Can only assume reason for low fps in the particular witcher levels i was trying is down to cpu being taxed too heavily.

I think its just down to them setting the fan speed too low for the sake of noise. Turn it up a bit and its fine 50/70C under load, idles drops right down as well. If ever a card needed WC.
