4K gaming possible at full settings on todays hardware?

My great worry is missing 120hz hence why I was waiting for the rog monitor but this and the incoming 4k monitors has changed things.

Same, I think if I did drop to 60hz I'd want a solid IPS panel(I'm under the impression the Sammy is a TN?) I think. If it's going to be fast and TN then I'm not going back to 120hz.

Oled + 120hz + 4k res and 27-30" screen and I'm buying. I have to say that my samsung TN is miles and miles beyond other TN's I've had in the past, even good ones. Irks me that with every new size in screens(which in terms of innovation have been shocking since the move to 1920x1080, ridiculous length of time to offer better screens, again largely down to lack of actual cable solutions for them... nuts) we seem to drop back down to the "old" tech. New size, 30hz, tn, rubbish, 24 cables.

120hz should be standard regardless of user, 120hz makes browsing the web better let alone gaming. 4k shouldn't have had a none 120hz option and the industry should have sorted out 4k cables 5 years ago.

Just tested Dirt Showdown with full settings (8 X MSAA) and good frames 50 minimum and 80 average.

As for dropping AA, yes it is noticeable (surprisingly), you can see edges but with AA, they are much smoother. More testing needed but AA is noticeable.

I just used CTRL and the scroll wheel to enlarge text to what I need Boom. I think it does the same thing.

with AA off entirely?
will be interesting to run through some different AA options and see what the lowest hit you can get, if things like FXAA / SMAA are enough at that res

Gregster did you use the percentage setting to enlarge the UI. For 1440P I have to set mine to 125% to makes icons / text seem normal, otherwise it is all way to small.. What setting did you use on this 4K panel?

This. I'm very interested in how you find general desktop use at that resolution and size. How is the scaling and is everything too small?

Agreed DM, it is almost a case of no matter what you want you have to compromise on one thing or another. Whether it be resolution, panel type, frequency - there simply isn't a monitor available that ticks all of the right boxes for me!

I have a Sammy S27A950 and that will do me until such time as ultra HD displays are available at 120hz, which could be some time by looks of things.

I'd love to try a 120hz monitor. But I do alright in BF4 on 60hz so I don't see the need personally.

More pixels is more pixels though. Horses for courses.

Thanks for posting Gregster!! Keep the benches coming, as said BF4 would be interesting :)

Really like to have 4k im more of an rts/rgp/mmo player and it would look sweet. I wonder if 290x CF would be enough to get 60fps sweetspot, probably not.

^^ 120hz is magnificent. But, if truth be told for any non fps games 60hz is more than adequate. Even fps at 60hz are good, but they are smooth as butter at 120hz. Also vastly reduces tearing (or noticeable tearing) for those of you who dislike the input lag etc. associated with vsync.

4k is a waste of time at 60hz. Ill take my 120hz 2560*1440 ips over any 4k screen. The day that 4k goes 120hz, ill be the first inline.

Not only that but i can downsample my resolution to 3880*1800.
All while running at 120hz on 3 titan black.
4k is a nay for me atm performance wise.

Nice work there Greg! Looking forward to updates.

How does the screen surface compare to the U2713HM? Is it possible to take a picture of the two (both monitors off) side-by-side? Users have reported to me that the screen is 'semi-glossy' but in your first picture it looks like it could just be very light matte. You might just have your lighting particularly well controlled in the shot though ;).

taking a quick look on the specs of the titan vs the 780ti, would the higher texture fillrate or memory bandwidth on the 780ti make any difference against the titan or would the 6gb vram just be too much for the 780ti to keep up with?
I ask because these new 4k monitor prices are making me very, very interested:D

Do you gave a couple of 780ti's already? If not, I am sure EVGA are releasing a 6gb version in the very near future. Tbh, I would be a little concerned with 3gb of VRAM potentially causing a bottleneck at that resolution. I would think 2560x1440/1600 would be absolutely perfect for those cards, but again I would have concerns with a 3gb buffer at 4K.

Not that I am encouraging the following behaviour, but you could always try out a 4K and if the performance in games/ benchmarks wasn't to your liking, then DSR.

Well in my testing so far, Two Titans cope ok but for the demanding titles, AA needs to be lowered. Dropping from 8XMSAA to 2XMSAA still gives a nice crisp image and smooths out the edges. When games are in full flow, they look very nice and you would be hard pushed to notice the difference with X2 AA or X8 AA in truth (I can't) but you can if you stand still in games.

As for benching, I will crack on with everything maxed, just so people can see what a pair of Titans get at full settings but the harsh truth is that modern AAA titles will struggle at 4K on a pair of high end GPU's, regardless of being Titans/780s/780Tis/290s/290Xs and you will need to lower settings or at least lower the AA a bit.

First impressions though is "WOW" Games look fantastic and nice and crisp. I have not noticed tearing but have noticed a ripple effect when the frames are low but keep the frames above 40 and it is smooth.

The colour is very good out the box and adding a touch to digital vibrance really makes the colours look nice and deep. The screen is very bright from the off and this is a good thing.

Very impressed this far and considering the price, what a fantastic buy and so glad I did it. 4K for under £500.... Need I say more on that?

The panel has the exact same finish to it as the Dell U2713HM. Not too glossy and a nice matt finish. I have a big window behind me that brings in a lot of light but even with the sun on the screen, I can read everything nice and clear.
