*** 4K Player Thread ***

Got my TV at the weekend, thinking about getting an Oppo next.

£650 is a lot of money for a 4k player  why not buy the panasonic and spend the rest on some 4k titles?

I know the Oppo is built like and tank and you paying for quality but still your not gaining anything over the cheaper players unless you need SACD/ DVD-AUDIO playback.

I watched Pacific Rim tonight on the 65B6V and the HDR is pretty impressive, it's gotta be said

I know it's only a 2k digital intermediate image, but the HDR was really quite special.

Anyone who thinks OLEDs dont have the brightness for proper HDR needs to see this.

If you like the HDR on that, try X-Men Apocalypse. The vivid colours work superbly with HDR and it's from a proper 4K DI too.

OLEDs can't go as bright as LCDs, that's a simple fact. Whether this actually makes any tangible difference to HDR viewing is far more debateable.

It's always a balancing act between quality and expense.

I got the Panny 900 because it was only about £100 more than the 700 at the time. I personally ruled out the Samsung as I didn't like the looks or lack of display plus I've read about some people having niggling issues with it.

The Oppo is a harder sell in my opinion. As you say, if you don't need the additional audio format support then I don't think it warrants another £200 over the Panasonic. The latter is already extremely well built.

In the end I bought an Xbox One S as a temporary stop gap as I it means I can play the HDR compatable games that are out, on it as well as watch UHD's, will look into getting a standalone player later in the year when I get a surrounds ound system.

Naff film though....

Yeah I wasn't disputing that LEDs have the much better brightness but I've seen people dimiss OLED as having bad HDR when in fact they probably have the best due to the range between black and peak brightness.

Yep but looks amazing!

Actually no, that's the fallacy. People believe that, because they go "blacker", their ultimate range must be better but, in reality, LCDs get closer to an OLED's black performance than an OLED gets to an LCD's peak brightness, so overall the LCD has better range.

The big question is how much this actually matters in the real world when watching films.

Hi there. I havent bothered with 4K bluray yet because of the limited availability of movies. I prefer older classic movies. The are always shot on celluloid and in my opinion look far superior to anything shot digitally.
Thankfully the move away from digital back to celluloid has started. The range of movies available on 4k bluray don't remotely appeal to me. I have seen the release line up and its not exactly inspiring.
Upscaled 4k bluray movies look truly superb on my system. I won't be upgrading any time soon(if at all) until classic movies start to come out and prices fall dramatically.
Who really wants to pay £20 for Hancock when the bluray is a fiver and the dvd is a quid on Amazon?
Lets face it, bluray hasn't exactly caught on here. Its only got a 20% market share after 10 years. DVD still rules the roost. I think bluray is marvellous but the vast majority still prefer DVD.
The bluray.com forum reported last week that in America, The Uk is not considered a serious market for bluray. And they are sadly right.
So if bluray has failed her, what chance has 4K bluray?
I wait and see but I don't expect it to take off here.

Speaking of classic movies shot on Celluloid, I nearly bought Goodfellas the other day on 4k, but it's had some scathing reviews for picture quality.

Is the UHD unwatchable? Not at all. As with many video phenomena, the eye quickly adjusts to the presentation, and the elevated black levels become routine. But having watched Goodfellas repeatedly on both UHD and the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, I find the Blu-ray to be a better viewing experience. (And yes, my setup is also ISF-calibrated for 1080p.)

Like other studios, Warner touts HDR as a major enhancement, but the UHD presentation of Goodfellas demonstrates that the HDR sticker prominently affixed to every 4K title does not necessarily guarantee a superior image. While the 4K image could no doubt be re-graded with accurate black levels, it is uncertain whether and how much the corrected image would offer any meaningful improvement over the Blu-ray. Regardless, Goodfellas stands as a demonstration of why HDR is not automatically a benefit. As UHD progresses, it may turn out that some—possibly many—older films should be left in SDR, without any attempt to "enhance" their blacks, contrast or colors.

I think Heat will be the first one that I would rush out and buy.

That reminds me need to watch my 25th Anniversary Edition its still shrink wrapped ! :)

Just been into Sainsburys at lunch and they have started selling 4k titles. 7 in all, eg Deadpool, Magnificent 7, Suicide Squad, £20-£25 each

keep an eye on how regularly these change.....I will tell you why

Well before Christmas (end of Nov by recollection )I went into a very large tesco's near me and was impressed to see 5 or 6 4k BR's mixed in with the standard BR's - and I thought "great, might see a a good selection alternating over the coming weeks / months"......but alas no

Not only did they not change them at all (even though I know more recent titles have been released in the UK) Tesco's just allowed them to fade away / changed stock completely so its back to std br's only.

Really disappointing it has to be said.

Obviously can stil go with your preferred website instead but imo still disappointed that Tesco's didnt even try after that month - 6 weeks
