*** 4K Player Thread ***

So after looking around all day i almost purchased a Xbox One. But in the end i went for a Samsung 4k player to go with my T.V and soundbar seen as both of them are Samsung.

I almost purchased the Panasonic 700 but i got a fantastic price on the Samsung player with 3 4k blu rays that came with it.

All in all i'm very happy with the price and when i can move into a larger house that will give me the ability to have a full surround sound setup i think i'll go for the Oppo or whatever is best out at that time.

Thanks all for the responses, fingers crossed that i have no issues with it!

Sounds like the Samsung and the XB1 have minor issues that the Panasonic doesn't.

The Panasonic issue, that article does discuss
One small complaint we have regarding the Panasonic UB700 (or indeed the step-up UB900) is its tendency to induce posterisation artefacts on HDR TVs that struggle to handle 12-bit video, including most 2015 sets and some 2016 models
is interesting, presumably it does not impact displays that are simulated 10bit (some Pan and Samsungs with the IPS panels) ;
since if it sends the tv 8bit material because the EDID revealed the true nature of the tv, that would be bad.
(I was confused by the reference to 12bit too since the 4k disc are only 10 ? - where is the 12bit material from ****)

FrankJH - Have you had several returns/exchanges of XB1 trying to resolve your problem? .... and then resigned yourself to keeping it for the games

EDIT **** saw an explanation
But.. and i touched on this when these players where first launched, but here goes again...
The Panasonic UB900 is taking a 10bit signal, converting it to 12 bit and then passing it to the TV, which then has to dither the 12 bit signal back down to the native display of the panel which is 10bit and by dither I mean best guess.
It is obvious that Panasonic would use the same algorithm in its Player to upscale 10bit to 12 bit as they would to then scale 12bit back down to 10bit in the TV, 'Tra-La' - no banding.
Just as some people who are outputting 12bit (turning deep colour on in the machine) from the Samsung K8500 player to a Samsung TV are seeing no banding because they are using the same algorithm from start to finish.
The real problems, and obviously there are the odd exception are when people are using 12 bit between different manufacturers.
The Samsung can output 10bit, so bit colour conversion should not enter into it, unless you have one of those 4k sets that have an 8bit panel so dithering still occurs.
Still puzzles me why the Panasonic did not come with native 10bit output, it can only have been an oversight in the sourcing of the chips.

Oh really where from? As i can seem to find it on the rain Forrest.

Someone else has already mentioned - wasn't sure whether to link as don't know if they compete with OcUK at all.

I use an Xbox One S 1TB... I would buy an Oppo player if I thought it would give me something more but having demo'd one and having the new audio due to be part of preview program, you don't really get much benefit.

JB Hi-Fi is a great place for deals, often do some pretty good 2 for X or 3 for X. Coming from Australia it also means the bluray is same region as us aswell.

My collection has hit 39 recently. Waiting for Pacific Rim to arrive. John Wick, Planet Earth 2, the remaining Star Treks and Ghostbusters I haven't got are my next purchases. I normally keep an eye out on eBay / classifieds and pick films up for £9-£13.

If anyone is getting Resident Evil: The Final Chapter UHD then import it from wow hd, as you get the UHD + 3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + UltraViolet

In the UK we don't get the 3D disc :(

Looking on Amazon, prices of UHD are very much in the Lots of Disposable Income Doesn't Think About The Price Much category as far as I can see. £20 - £25 prices for most of them. Anyone have an opinion as to when they'll start coming down to Blu-ray prices? Or the £15 mark, at least.

A selection have been down to £15 a few times on AMazon and Zavvi so it's worth checking every now and then. They're back up to 'normal' prices now but they'll be back down again soon I reckon.

Wowhd reviews on trustpilot are awful, can they even be trusted?

I've never had a problem. I've got John Wick UHD coming next week £15 :)
The normal Blu Ray disc will be region locked.

Don't think you're hunting hard enough.... I got the following...

- £39.99 (£6.60 per disc) for Premire Ultra HD Collection from HMV. Life of Pi, Revenant, Kingsman, Independence Day, Exodus, Maze Runner.
- Deepwater Horizon (new and sealed) £17 eBay
- Jupiter Ascending & Bourne Legacy for £21. Used classifieds.
- Oblivion, Lucy, Snow White and Huntsman, The heart of the sea, Everest for £13.50 on Amazon new
- Xmen Apocalyse for £12 eBay
- Creed, Ghostbusters and other Huntsman for £10-£11 each eBay

Only UHDs I've ever spent £20 on is Deadpool and Goodfellas. Rest have been £10-£13 on average.

I purchased Star Trek Beyond from HMV yesterday for £24.99 and that's quite steep, but i was impressed with the visuals and it's a start to my collection as i already own the first two on standard blu ray.

I don't want to repurchase them in 4k as they also sell for £24.99 a pop.

Next few movies i'm going for are mad max, Warcraft and pacific rim.

Then planet Earth 2 when it comes out, I'm curious about passengers as I've heard mixed reviews about it so i'm not sure i want to spend £20 on it. from the trailers I've seen it looks alright i just aren't sure.
