So then folks, I'm about to pull the trigger, I have a KS8000 and i'm looking to take the next step.

Any recommendations?

From Xbox One to Samsung/Panasonic?

Not sure what to go for, hoping someone can help me as i'll be ordering a lot of 4k blu rays, I've already ordered Suicide squad 4k, The Revenant and The Martian.

Any others i should also purchase?

Yeah have installed but can't say I've noticed any differences.

I have the Panny 900 and love it but the 700 will offer pretty much the same performance with a few less features. No experience of the XBox or Samsung.

Kind of depends if you're after good films or reference quality 4K Blurays :)

Deadpool and X-Men Apocalypse are both stunning quality, using full 4K DIs but the latter isn't exactly a great film. I still use it as a demo disc though as the vibrant colours really show off WCG and HDR.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is also very good. Not the ultimate in terms of resolution/quality but the full 16:9 IMAX screens fill your screen and look great.

What I'm looking forward to more than anything else right now is Planet Earth 2

Unless you are a gamer I really dont see the point in even considering the XBox One S now that Sammy and Panny have devices around the same mark, and personally after Ive had ....difficulties....with my One S playing UHD discs I couldnt recommend it all unless you are an avid MS / XBox fan.

DeepWater Horizon
The Shallows (an OK-ish film, but some of the scenes in 4k/HDR look amazing)
Kingsman
Deadpool - ok film imo that looks fantastic in 4k , the bridge scene is imo the only good reason to get the 4k disk

three 4k disks I can recommend

Sony UBP-X800 also releasing April, think it will cost a bit more than an xbox one S though.

Don't see why not, the 4K discs I've played on it were flawless.

What disc did you have an issue with? The blu-ray player app on Xbox One was updated very recently.

Every single one I have (I have 5 now)

even plain BR's dont play properly all the time, constant sync / flickering even though I know Ive previously watched The Shallows without issue. Even tried the Shallows a 2nd time and even that is flickering now as well.

Its more than that now, as the Sammy can be found for similar money to the XBS including the cost of a remote etc, unless you are going to use MS' s console for gaming its daft to put up with minor inconveniences by using a console than getting a dedicated disc player.

Believe the Sony is going to be around £400 (compared to a XBOne S + remote @ £250ish ) is a little too big a jump for most

Sounds like some sort of HDMI issue rather than the console...

So far I have: 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', Pacific Rim and Life of Pi and they all worked fine in HDR.

Panasonic have also announced newer players which will come in under the existing 700. Might be a good time to wait as I think there'll be more lower-cost players in the next few months and I think we'll see the first sub-£200 player before the middle of the year.

Seems strange considering I played The Shallows without issue , but the next day no other discs worked (and The Shallows also produced same issue on 2nd playing)

Also consider that under normal gaming conditions the issue isnt apparant at all

4k with HDR is the limit of what a HDMI 2.0 signal can do

Were you using the HDMI cable Microsoft supply? That's a High Speed one so should be fine.

I realise you dont know me, but look at my post count for a technical forum - apart from that I have worked in IT for nearly 30 years .......so yeah I have covered the basics including testing multiple high speed & 2.0 cables (depending on branding they can be described as either):)

Silly question but is their any difference when it comes to video playback quality when it comes to X1 or a dedicated 4k blu ray player. Or is it just Dolby Atmos and other stuff that blu rays are better at?

I've been looking at the X1 and Panny 700 as i prefer the build quality on the Panny compared to the Samsung.

The thing is i don't have a surround sound setup as my 4K player will be going in my bedroom and it's Tiny and i currently use it with a 2.1 Soundbar that's quite old.

I'm just thinking if i purchase a 4K blu ray player i should prob shill out some more and get my self a nice sound setup right?

Could it be the reader in the drive. I believe xbox games are installed and the console only uses the disk to check that the game is in and then runs it from the hard drive.

Pacific Rim is another good 4k title to show off. Currently waiting for my copy to hop across the world from JB HiFi.

Sounds like the Samsung and the XB1 have minor issues that the Panasonic doesn't.

Its hardly a reason not to buy one though and the Oppo has the same said "minor" issue at the moment. I am happy with my Samsung and I have a Panasonic 4k TV!

To be fair, this loss in chroma resolution is unlikely to be noticed by most viewers, due to the ultra-high resolution of 3840×2160 content, and the fact that our eyes are inherently less sensitive to chroma than luma information anyway (which is the underlying basis for 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma subsampling). Nevertheless, it’s reassuring to see a brand like Panasonic pay full attention to the specs to deliver the cleanest, most pristine picture that’s faithful to the director’s intentions. According to a reliable industry source, it is this Chroma Bug 2020 bug (as coined by Spears) that’s causing OPPO to temporarily hold back the release of its UDP-203 UHD Blu-ray player while waiting for a firmware fix.
