5800x now vs 5900x pre-order

still deciding over the 5800x would also buy the MSI X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI to go with it , I currently have the i7 6700k with the 5700xt nitro+ probably wont be upgrading the GPU for a while so not sure how much difference it will make, I just casually game and do general tasks and would also prefer to keep the Sabrent 1TB Rocket nvme which is gen3

pretty set with other parts such as Z73 AIO and Corsair 3600mhz 4x8gb sticks

yeah maybe but surely your got more cores pumping heat out too, I dunno could be either way I guess. Anyway the deal is done fed up waiting i7 4770k > 5800X is a nice upgrade finally worth making.

Now £380 at OcUK too :)

The dual chiplet CPUs have a more even heat distribution and seem to run cooler. The single chiplet CPUs appear to run hotter as the die is offset.

Also TBH,even a Ryzen 7 3700X would be an upgrade over your current CPU,and certainly a Ryzen 7 5800X would be!

I ended up cancelling my 5900x due to who knows when there going to be in stock, went with a 5800x in the end, just do gaming so hoping its all i need :)

The £380 price of the 5800x negates a lot of the flak the cpu got because of MSRP. You could argue that for £60 more than the 5600x, the price is well justified for 2 more cores.
And the fact that the availability of the 5900x is atrocious, coupled with the price going over MSRP, up to £600 on this site, then the 5800x is a no brainer.
Of course if your work needs cores, then you just have to wait... But for gaming, photo editing, general usage it's the most appropriate choice.

(Going through justifications on why I cancelled my preorder of the 5900x, this is the best i got)

Got my 5800x and x570 tomahawk today. Can't use it unfortunately as I don't have the two amd screw clips you get with the Corsair h100i. Thankfully I ordered it from Corsair on the weekend and it's being delivered tomorrow.

I've found the tomahawk a bit flimsy compared to my z390 maximus xi hero.. just flexs a lot when plugging in stuff etc. Although it's meant to be great for thermals.

Sorry for jumping in but currently weighing up options for an upgrade in a couple of months.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon a 3080FE today so considering swapping out my 3600 for a 5800X or a 5900X and leave it as is for a number of years.
My machine will be pretty much used for gaming only so I would assume a 5800X would be more than enough for 5 years give or take?

Thanks, I think I'll go for that if I can find one at a decent price. Missed out on a banger of a deal when I was sleeping. A place was selling damaged box 5800X's for £289 this morning.

I just installed my 5800X yesterday, upgraded from a 3600. I too had eyes on the 5900X but the pricing and availability didn't make sense. For those thinking you need 12 cores to beat Intel, the 5800X beat the 10 core Intel equivalent in all benchmarks I've seen anyway. In terms of gaming, the upgrade from 3600 is fantastic. Even at high GPU bound resolutions, the lows are much improved for a much smoother gaming experience. No judders in the city part of the RDR2 benchmark for example, or when driving around in Cyberpunk. I also seen my average frames boost from 65 to over 70 in Cyberpunk at 3440x1440 max settings. Then you have SAM to enable as well; in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark I increased from 104 FPS to 142 FPS!! In Borderlands 3 I got an increase to 119 FPS from 101 FPS. It really is worth the upgrade!

Nice! Thats a good improvement for sure. In hindsight perhaps I shouldn't have bought the higher end motherboard. My initial plan was to get a 3600 as a stop gap to get the last 12 core CPU on AM4 and leave it at that for 5-6 years or AM5 was well established. Now I'm thinking on the 5800X or perhaps wait to see if a 5800XT appears.

I kind of regret getting the 5800x, like others I got tired of waiting on my order of a 5900x ordered in the first 15 minutes with absolutely no indication of when I would get it (not ordered from here as was showing pre-order whilst the other place was showing in stock ).

Anyway the main reason for my disappointment is the heat this thing pumps out. Currently running 76 degrees at 35% usage, this is using a 360 AIO. I've messed about with PBO and Curve Optimizer for many hours, but this hasn't achieved much. Even at idle a few % load can push temps from 35 to 50. There's also some games that are pushing 70 - 80 % utilisation so not confident on the longevity of this CPU.

Going from a 3600 to a 5800X with a 3080@1440p was ok but nothing to write home about, some games like watchdogs legion for example I gained no fps at all with Sottr being one of the largest gains going from 139 > 157 but certainly not game changing.
HW unboxed did a good vid a few days back showing what you stand to gain between CPUs at different resolutions with a 6800.

Supprised your chip is running that hot, I'm getting 72c max in R23 with a wraith prism.

Unless it’s actually causing an issue I wouldn’t worry about it mate. I can get similar temps
on my 3900xt with a 240 aio at low loads but then at full load it doesn’t go over 75 either! Ryzen is known to spike.

It’s also worth saying that 35% could be 2-3 cores at full load rather than an even spread. Very few games benefit from multi cores these days. Whilst we have ever so slightly moved away from four cores in gaming we haven’t moved that far and in the majority of games the engines will rely on maxing out a few cores.

That very strange. I also have a 360mm AIO on my 5800x and all-core stress tests only see it hit 70c, whereas gaming is around 50c.

1 of the cores was at 100% and 2 others 90% so I guess it could be pushing voltage through those cores to maintain 4850 mhz making the temps high.

All core Cinebench is hitting 83 so not as bad as some I've seen, I'll check what the contact of the cold plate is like and make sure it's seated correctly. Are you using stock settings or have you changed in bios / Ryzen Master etc?
