Don't listen to the MoneySavingExperts. If you want to do it, then ask yourself two questions :

  • Do I have the funds?
  • Can I conceal this from the wife?

If it's a yes to both, then fill that basket and have some fun.

Justify ?

It's a platform at the end of it's life. It currently has value. It will be less so if he waits. He can sell up and get better performance and less heat/noise with minimal additional outlay. He then will be on a new platform that will have a better future upgrade path.

Similar performance. Would cost a fair bit to change.

Pretty obvious really.

Not really obvious..

Personally I had nothing but issues with asus fan control. This was my experience with my z77 sabertooth

I bought a grid+ v2 which is a great voltage fan controller. However CAM software is really bad so I use OpenHardwareMonitor and Grid Control which are much lighter and more stable.

Every platform is at the end of it's life pretty much from day one, technology moves fast, Amd on the other hand seem to flog a dead horse while the competition stride ahead, don't get me wrong i'm very interested in this release, but whats the point in an 'upgrade path' when the platform is so outdated lacking what are common features in 6 months to a year, just look at the Am3 platform....

In a year or so time i'll bet that X99 will still be relevant for gaming and whilst it will lose value i'll predict that it will command a better resale price than a second hand AM4 setup.

You are that confident people will be paying more for less? Is the Intel brand really like Apple?

What does that even mean ? Show me the reviews ? show me overclocked performance ? whats so innovative about this new platform that makes it so great ?. I'm not trying to be negative but the hype is at hysterical levels now to the point that this launch can only disappoint some people because expectations are now at unrealistic levels. Wait for the reviews for gods sakes.

Maybe you should take your own advice then as you are coming off salty.

So basically you are trying to justify your own financial and emotional investment in socket 2011 by saying AM4 is a dead horse even before it is released, yet I don't see you in all the SKL and KL threads saying the same.

Edit!!

You have no clue how long AM4 will last or what CPUs AMD will release on it over the next few years.

lol @ this thread. if you sell up x99 at most you will be adding an additional £50~ if that! for 2 more cores + (likely better ipc) and a platform that will remain relevant for atleast 4 years.
