5870...is it really worth it?

The spec I made up for you will be the best you'll get for your monies, or there about.

The i7 set up is more expensive, but I can't stress how it's much better value.

The motherboard and extra RAM is far better.

The PSU is modular too.

PCI-E speeds do matter though as a second card can be a cheap upgrade in the future when prices have dropped significantly.

It's your first build too, I guarantee that you will get the overclocking itch sooner or later. :p

i have another problem tho....
900 pounds have to be max with the delivery too...
and as i live in Malta my delivery cost will be about 100 pounds :(
so 800 is max lol im so nooby,i forgot totally about this delivery....

So that PSU is modular really, why doesnt it write in OCUK that it is?
i dont want to buy from anywhere else because OCUK rocks :D

Not for me, just going to get a better mobo, put in another 4870, overclock that and my CPU and rock on for another 8 months or so :P, I only play at 1600x1000 res anyway.

Love how people talk about FX cards as investments  4890 if you can get one at £100ish mark or 5850 if not. £300 is too much in my eyes for the kind of real world gains you see.

An i7 920 is a lot better than an i5 750 to be honest.

Especially when working to a budget of £900.

Couple that with a better motherboard, more RAM and the prospect for even more RAM when the price of DDR3 drops and the DIMM density goes up.

i5 isn't worth it in my opinion. Not when you can get a lot more for not loads more.

That's also an OEM CPU, there would need to be a cooler with it too.

I'd rather have an i5 tbh, cheaper and as the picture above states, you can get some good components for a nice price.

Well yeah I want the best bang for buck and I do think it is the 5850, if it can be clocked to 5870 speeds, even better.

Stu

Apparently the 5850 can be clocked higher than the 5870. There is a thread somewhere with a link showing overclocking stats with the 5850, was very impressive for £100 less.

I would stay away from Powercolor ... there is a thread on here somewhere about Powercolor and issues with their warrenty and RMA service. Personally I'd go with a brand like Sapphire or XFX.

those are just the limits on the Asus software. Does not really tell you if it will go that high or not. My old 4890 had the voltage tweak software and would not max out in the slider
