Fair enough

Let me know how you get on

Edit you post to remove the other supplier's name

i cant see an edit post option mate im afraid, also its not a suppliers name its a fitting nickname i heard from them, its normal business practise to post issues and bad experiences with competitors surely theres no problem? ;)

Am tempted with a 5850 on the Q6600, but think by what people are saying a 5870 would be very good.

I would use the extra funds for another Noctua fan, new mouse and maybe a SSD

If its any help, I went from a Q6600 (@3.4Ghz) with a 8800GTX on a Abit IP35 pro board to a ATi 5850 and I've noticed a good gain in fps so far. I've only tried it with Vantage and Empire total war so far though as I haven't had time to test any other games out.

Its allowed me to turn a few more bells and whistles on and still maintain a higher framerate than i did with the 8800 GTX

yes that is a help.

Have you been able to max things out?

some p35 mobo is still a good choice, as in the future you might go with i5/i7, so spent less on this mobo upgrade, save it for future

Hi,

I am looking for a 2nd hand motherboard for my Q6600. What I am going to do is order the 5870 and fit it to my current motherboard whilst I try and source a different board

yes that is a help.

Well the settings on Empire:TW I had with the 8800gtx were;

Res: 1680 X 1050
AA x 4
AF x 16
Shadows off
About half the other settings on High
Averaged about 40 - 60fps on the campaign map, and 20 - 40fps in land/sea battles

with the 5850
I have now got the following;
AA x 8
AF x 16
Shadows High
All other settings on Ultra
Now average 60 - 120fps on the campaign and so far in sea battles its never dropped below 55fps (I haven't had a land battle yet to compare)

The only thing I have noticed that seems to be an issue with ATI cards and this game is setting Volumetric effects on disables Anti Aliasing. However its a moot point in comparison as I never had it enabled on the 8800gtx as it would slow things down to a crawl

You'd definately notice an improvement as it is quite a bit faster than a 9800gt. If you get a 5870 now, you can upgrade the rest of the system in the future and just put it in that. That way you get best of both worlds, smooth gameplay now, and even better when you eventually upgrade the rest of the system

Well I have just order the 5870 and the list above :D

Cheers for the advice
