5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

Right, my 40d has given up the ghost and died on me, I'm not too happy as I loved this camera, but what to do now?

I was using the camera with the EF-S 17-85 IS lense as my main walkabout lens,but the lens isnt that great and I have been looking at getting a different lens to replace it (no idea what though).

My choices are the 5D MK III and the 24-105 F4 L IS lens which would be a great improvement on what I had. Or, the 7D and ??? No idea on the lense for this camera.

I mainly shoot people or cityscapes, and the wider lenses suit me best, but there are times when I like a bit of a zoom handy. Currently have been using a 20mm F2.8 canon lens and the "nifty fifty" which is great for portraits.

Can I have people's opinions on what you would choose and why please. Need to get one soon but really stuck on what to decide on.

5Diii, it has everything the 7D has and more.

For what you want (people and landscapes), 5DIII.

It does mean you need to get rid your 17-85 as it is a EF-S, it won't work on the 5Diii, but there are LOADS of nice lenses you can get if you got deep enough pockets. The 24/1.4 is really nice for landscapes, the 17/TS-E is also awesome for landscape work. For people, the 85/1.2 makes subjects pop like nothing else. (can you tell i am a prime shooter? :p)

Or sell everything and get a D800 (might as well get that over with right now!)
 
The 5DmkII is only £1500 if you want to save a few quid. Still, if you're anything like me you'll instantly wish you'd got the mkIII :D
 
Did the AF on the 40D work ok for what you shoot? If so I'd seriously consider the 5D mark II and put the money saved towards lenses :)
 
Quite a big price difference between the two, so if money is no object then go for the 5D.

I own both cameras and the 5D is fantastic. I still use the 7D when I'm shooting something where I need the reach, such as sports from a distance, plus the 7D shoots quicker too.

Given what you shoot, you will appreciate how wide you can get on a full frame body plus its great for portraits.
 
I'm in the same boat.

Love my 40D and I don't shoot much, but having video and the extra that the 7D offers seems worth it. Plus a 2nd hand one is £700 so on around £425 ish to upgrade.

The 5D III is 3x the price of the 7D, which is a lot, plus I'd have to sell my Tokina wide angle.

I think I've just asked and answered my question in the same post :D

The 5D would be vastly better for the cityscape photos you want to do, especially if you combine it with a 17-40L F4 instead of the 24-105L. It has better ISO, autofocus and image quality, not to mention better weather sealing. Does cost a lot more but buy right once is better than buying wrongly multiple times.
 
The only reason to get the 7d is if a crop sensor really makes a difference for you. If you shoot wildlife then your 200mm f2.8 magically looks like a 320mm f2.8. But then all it is doing is cropping the centre of the "full frame" image which you could do quite happily with the 5d3.

I'd get the 5d3 every time.

But it's a lot of money, especially for a casual photographer. Great for a pixel peeper and perfectionist, but would there really be that much difference? For me I could buy a 5D III, but the 7D just seems much better value, saving around £1400 and I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of selling on my other lenses.

Your right if your just a casual tog the difference isn't huge and the money you save would let you buy some great glass, personally I'd be tempted to get a 5dmkii as second hand they have come down an awful lot and the only real gripe people have is the af which is the same as your 40D. I recently moved from a 30D to a 5Dmkii and I love the improvement and as the AF is the same as I had before it really doesn't bother me.

I as always under the impression that the 5D and 5Dmkii had the same autofocus as the xxxD series; 9 AF points with only the centre being cross type. This opposed to the 40D (50D, 60D and now 650D) which have the same 9 AF points but they are ALL the more sensitive cross types.

As such the 40D will have better AF than the 5Dmkii. That was my understanding at least?

correct, which is why the 5DMKII got such bad press, since consumer DSLR actually offered equal or better AF.


Anyway, back on topic, I would wait and see what the new Canon FF is, hopefully it will be 90% of the 5DMKIII for 50% of the cost. Quite a few good rumorus pointing towards the 5dMKIII sensors (only logical choice really) with a 7D type body and AF, perhaps limited to 3-4FPS in firmware.

How different is the 5Dmkii/5Dmkiii body from the 7D? I have handheld all three on security cables at airport duty free and Id be hard pressed to point out differences. Are they not basically the same size, and very similar button layout?

Don't get me wrong, I am hoping for the same thing; but if there was to be more of a reduction in costs (and distancing in spec to the 5Dmkiii) I would maybe get ready for something FF in a 60D type plastic body.
