5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

ISO 12800, no noise reduction, just resized. Should be perfect for normal usage. At 25,600 noise does show on resized images although with a little NR could be perfectly usable especially for web use.

I can take all that and swap the words Canon and Nikon round :p

You may be able to but I have yet to see a clock that goes anti-clockwise, a volume control which goes in the opposite direction to increase the volume or a screw you have to rotate anti-clockwise to tighten.

Did the stopwatch test to see if canon are still conservative with the fps figure for burst and indeed, not as much as before but it's exactly 7fps as opposed to the spec sheet 6fps. My 40D gets 7.8fps on an Extreme III CF card.

A really basic test tbh, shoot a stopwatch face at 1/1000sec at whatever ISO and count the number of pics that spans a whole second (or as close as) on the watch display. My 7 was exactly 1 second.

Also, burst comparison vs the 40D:

I wonder why they quote it lower than what it can actually do. How are you finding the 17-40L?

Probably they test with the cards available at the time of development I guess, like how other device makers don't state that newer cards are supported on phones because at the time of development they weren't available (Galaxy S3 manual says 32GB cards supported, for example).

How I see it anyway :p

17-40 is rather good, coupled with the 100% viewfinder it's a joy composing at 17mm, more view than the 10-22 on the 40D (naturally). I have found though that at the widest end equivalent on both lenses that the 10-22 has less CA and is a touch sharper with both at f4 but I'll do a detailed test this afternoon as it was a quick and dirty test last night. Bokeh is more pleasing on the L though at the same focal length and aperture.

I wouldn't have thought that card speed would make a difference to frame rate initially as it will fill the buffer first before writing that data to the card. So until the buffer is full your card speed should not make a difference to outright frame rate. Or do I have it all wrong?

Hmm interesting, I notice the SD card writing LED begins to flash the moment you start shooting though so I assumed it starts writing immediately hence why faster cards result in better burst performance and why a CF card yields slower rates as the SDXC is faster.

You could do the test with no memory cards at all and see how long it takes to fill the buffer?

Pixel grip has not arrived yet but I will check when it does!

What you calling ugly eh!

Can you guys do a quick test with expanded ISO please? Here's what I've been testing out tonight under dim workspace lighting:

ISO 102,400

ISO 51,200

At ISO 12,800 there is no sensor heat noise in the lower corners and at ISO 25k is less obvious than 51k as well so from my testing it seems ISO 51k is the real maximum and for use in extreme circumstances or perhaps for video whereas 12,800 is the highest usable ISO without having noise affect images.

This is fine by me as I'm coming from having highest usable being 1600 in ideal conditions but am interested in seeing if the corner noise is common among bodies.

Should one lose all his marbles and consider a 5D3, what lens/lenses would you recommend?

I currently have a 40D with 12-24, 50, 17-50 and 55-250 and shoot everything, but in general mainly shoot landscapes, seascapes, sunsets and want to get into portraits a lot more. Plus if I really want a lens for sports/motorsports (a rareity) I could always get a 70-300 DO as an L Telephoto is way too much to justify.

I see a lot of love for a 17-40mm, but that might just be too restrictive, would it be better to just get the kit which makes the 24-105mm work out to be great value?

I was wondering whether I should have opted for the 24-105 as well but I shoot more wide angles than anything else and portraits are on the primes but it depends on your usage really.

From my own fiddling I've not seen a need for IS with ISO ranging up to a usable 12,800 and selecting the min shutter speed in AV mode as 1/15 although that is down to what you're capable of shooting I guess :p

Get a 24L, 50L and a 70-200 and your set ;)

if money was no object of course!

If u was to buy today, geta 5d3 with the kit lens and that will serve u well for your needs for a long time till you want primes or something

mrk, just seen those shots on TP and commented :D

What lenses do you have now??

I've bought too many lenses, maybe I should just stick with a 17-40mm, retain the nifty 50 and add a 70-300 if I start shooting more sports etc.

Or just buy Raymond's old gear :D

The longer I stay offshore on this boat, the more money I'll have to waste on getting back into photography. FFS!!!!

You can buy them for me, just seen the prices

How would a 17/24mm on a FF compare to the 14-24mm on my crop?
