5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

The 5D mkiii is just slightly bigger, but in the hand they feel virtually the same and button layout is very similar like you say.

I'm not too worried about getting rid of my lenses as I only have th one EF-Smlense and I'm not happy with the picture quality from it, hence I have been using athe 20mm F2.8 and the 50mm F1.8 as they produce higher quality pictures in my oppinion. So only really getting rid of one lens which I'm happy to do.

Ism leaning towards the 5D MKIII as overall it better for my needs, but might see what this new FF offering is before I makes decision.

The D800 is mind numbingly good and its contrast based AF is better than the 5d III as is live view but in most other areas they are neck and neck or exchanging blows here and there.

My good friend has the 7D and complains about ISO noise, he used to have a 40D just like myself although his ownership of it was short (months) whereas I've had mine since 2008 ish.

If I were you I'd go 5D :p

My other good friends have D800s and swear by them :p I tell you this, Nikon know how to lay out a body!

But if you've never used a Nikon you will probably think "WTF is this, WTF is that? WTF is it doing that!" a lot :p The systems differ a bit compared to Canon. Also the lenses zoom the wrong (right?) way ¬_¬

It zooms the other way, twists on the other way and the dials to exposure compensation is also the other way.

I often wonder if it's all done on purpose (to separate itself from Canon or vice versa), I mean it screws the lens on the opposite way you screw on a bottle cap.

It is all about your reference frame, on big lenses you screw the camera onto the lens!

Off topic, to me he control layout and rotations directions of the Nikon system is just so much more natural and intuitive, which i why I purchased a Nikon in the first place. Canon feels like a left handed camera to me. It may be the lens mounting involves a rotation opposite of a bottle cap but a lens is not the same and the orientation is horizontal, for me rotation a lens from left to the right is so much more comfortable and is the natural rotation direction of your wrist and hand in that pose. In fact it actually is a clockwise rotation just like a bottle top when your camera is facing out, which is the case when your camera hangs down from a neck strap.

When it comes to zoom and focus rings Canon just seem to go backwards. If I want to increase focal length/zoom or increase the focus distance I want to rotate clockwise, clockwise is synonymous with increasing, like a clock. Canon's are very awkward in this respect, IMO.

I can take all that and swap the words Canon and Nikon round :p

Right, my 40d has given up the ghost and died on me, I'm not too happy as I loved this camera, but what to do now?

I was using the camera with the EF-S 17-85 IS lense as my main walkabout lens, but the lens isnt that great and I have been looking at getting a different lens to replace it (no idea what though).

My choices are the 5D MK III and the 24-105 F4 L IS lens which would be a great improvement on what I had. Or, the 7D and ??? No idea on the lense for this camera.

I mainly shoot people or cityscapes, and the wider lenses suit me best, but there are times when I like a bit of a zoom handy. Currently have been using a 20mm F2.8 canon lens and the "nifty fifty" which is great for portraits.

Can I have people's opinions on what you would choose and why please. Need to get one soon but really stuck on what to decide on.

Many thanks in advance for your help on this.

Mate if u have the funds for a 5d3 or even a 1dx . get the best money can buy mate. why skimp and buy an older inferior product when the funds you have u can afford better?

always buy the best thats priced near to your budget mate. if you got 3k to spend on a body, no point getting a 650d for example when you can get a 5d3!! come on bruv!!

got mine today, the rating button can be remapped to something actually useful:

And one feature of the new AF system I really like:

Coming from the 40D, the new AF zoning system took about 30 minutes to suss, I can see myself liking this a LOT!

You guys with the mkiii, do you use the auto lighting enhancer as well? I've got it on standard at the moment, seems to just bump shadow details really.

It took me 30 mins to figure out how to write separate files to the 2 cards.

Note mrk - if you write different format to both cards (back up purposes), the buffer fills up MUCH faster. Shooting same file (raw/raw vs raw/mraw) to both cards is much more time efficient, even if it is not memory efficient.

Well thats it, gone an ordered a Canon 5D MKII and the 24-105 L lens, should be with me by the weekend. Cant flippin wait.

OFC then ill be on here asking about all the differetn functions it has compared to my 40D

There are a wealth of options compared to the 40D but of you're a 40D master then you won't have any problems flying through the 5D :-P

Cheers Ray, I will look into backup purposes for dual card shooting but I have the SanDisk 128GB sdxc which should deliver epic reliability as the cf has done

I'm posting from my phone but just download the firmware and out it on the root of a cf card and click the firmware version on the cam to start the upgrade.

Now i remember why i haven't updated....
