6700 XT Owners Thread

You said you have no spare PC but that you gave your friend your 5700XT that also had coil whine. Start by asking him does he hear coil whine on the 5700XT and even ask if he can test the 6700XT for you.

If the answet is no to either than it's not the GPUs.

I still have the 5700XT I haven’t handed it over yet (doing that tomorrow). I did experience coil whine on that in my system but there’s the possibility that both cards just have coil whine. By the end of the day I should have a 5700XT and a 6700XT, and an RM750x and an EVGA 850W so should be able to get to the bottom of it hopefully.

This might be a daft question, but I’m thinking of keeping all the PSU cables in place and just switching them all over at the PSU end when the new one arrives. Are there any downsides to doing that?

Didn't you say you had a Corsair PSU and now bought a EVGA ? if so yes a big downside the cables are completely different and would probably blow everything if you did manage to plug them in !

It's not possible to fit Corsair cables into an EVGA PSU anyway (and vice versa). I have an RM1000 modular and an EVGA750 semi modular PSU and the cables simply don't fit

I would suggest not mounting the replacement PSU until you test it. Just plug the cables into the PC/GPU and into the wall. Saves you having to strip the PC down.

I can’t remember what the setting is called in Radeon software but I did turn one on that was supposed to ensure that the frame rate never rises above 144Hz which is what my monitor goes up to. Whine was still there annoyingly.

Now that you mention it, I’m giving my 5700XT to a mate as I don’t feel comfortable selling it giving the issues I’ve had with it. I’d let him know my issues with coil whine on that card previously but realised when we were talking about it that I hadn’t actually heard the whine on that for a while. Maybe I just need to bed this one in a bit.

I had read somewhere that some GPU/PSU pairings can cause whine as opposed to the PSU itself whining, so this EVGA 850W today might help and I’ll update the thread if that works.

You need to make sure any cables you use are compatible, i doubt Corsair cables will work with a EVGA (if in doubt change them over)

That’s news to me so thank you - they looked the same on the picture so thanks for clarifying.

Jesus did you see the price of the ASRock one today?

I think its stayed so long in stock for this very reason but shocking prices happening.

The OcUK members method (and price regarding the fighter) is definitely the way to go.

This is the one I got, mostly as it was the only one I've even had a chance to get. I had a new/first ever build that I couldn't use (or even run diagnostiscs on to see if it's working) gathering dust thanks to no GPU, so I just decided to very reluctantly take the hit rather than just have this new PC sitting around until the market stablises...

Asides the crippling buyers remorse of paying that much for a GPU that I didn't exactly want (had my heart set on a evga 3070 or 3080), and the AMD driver timeout error, I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the card. It's a huge upgrade from the old GTX 780M I had in my old imac that I booted windows from. Getting an average of 88fps on AC Valhalla on the highest settings @ 1080p (only 60ish on Killing Floor 2, which was a slight disappointment), but I'm sure there's things I can do to tweak the card and push the performance up more. I'd probably sell this and then get a 3080 once things settle down and the prices all go back to normal, but that's a long way off. Right now, I'm pretty happy with the 6700 xt overall.

Normal might be mid 2022

shortages all over my business transport and expect it to impact everything else

One thing of note I had a powercolor red devil 5700xt with 0 coil whine, it was so quiet I had to check the fans were working etc... I liked that card and wished I didn't sell it.

I had the MSI ‘gold’ one mate. Convinced I lost the silicon lottery with it to be honest amongst other things. Driver timeout in BOCW and Warzone which could be blamed on the games, except it was also driver crashing hourly on RDR2 as well. Have a mate with the exact same card who has 0 issues.

One of the big problems with my 5700XT was the horrible gold casing had lots of flex too which didn’t help as I’m sure it was just rattling against itself.

Good riddance to that one. I was also gonna switch to team green until all the 6700XTs landed. No crashes so far however on the 6700 so fingers crossed. It’s also so much quieter, the 5700XT sounded like a combustion engine when it got going which was any game. I can’t speak highly enough if the lack of sound from the Sapphire card.

In the same boat as many/most now: shiny new PC, running an old GPU. The 6700XT seems to check most of the boxes for me (I'm using a GTX 1070...), but finding one is a PITA, obviously. I won't ever support the scalping market, but I'm also not willing to get shafted by retailers looking to make a quick buck off my misery.

So, what is an "acceptable" price range given the current market conditions, potential future shortages, etc?

£500-£600 I guess. Good luck with getting one in that range though, prices only seem to be getting higher each week.

Yeah, that's my concern. I've seen a few available in the wild for £650-£750, but needed a ballpark figure really. It might hurt now to overpay by a £100 or so, but at this rate that might actually become a good deal...

The way it's going £650 wouldn't be bad, they're selling on ebay for more. It's a question of whether or not you get to ride the wave. If you get it now for £650, and in 2 years when you want to upgrade it's crashed to £150 and better cards are out there for £400, you're in trouble.

I sorta expect what's happened here is in part due to the pricing range of the 2080 series, vastly more expensive for similar performance against a 3070, and the market is "correcting" itself back to that price point. Even then, that "correction" is getting battered due to scalpers and supply/demand. Instead of 2080tis losing value, 3070s have gained it.
