6870 is here! for £170, WTF?? HELP!!

Did Nvidia ever release a renamed card that was slower than the card it was replacing??

So charging more for the same card is better than charging less for a weaker card that happens to branded differently to the previous generation?

Arguable G80 8800GTX->G92 9800GTX was a mixed story - it had less VRAM and was slower in some areas but faster in others.

Plenty of plausiable reasons sure... but at the end of the day as an impact on the average consumer its no different to what nVidia did...

I don't really care either way I just found it interesting how die hard AMD fans defend it to the hilt whilest not even the most diehard nVidia fan even tried to defend it when nVidia did it.

If they'd have called them 6770 and 6830 as they properly are no one would have blinked an eye lid.

The reasons & intentions are just as important as the outcome.
When was the last time you went to court.
And obviously you don't believe in people making mist with a terrible outcome, they must have all done things intentionally.

I can't actually find anything nVidia has done thats substantially different.

8800GTX->9800GTX has a die-shrunk, reworked core with better shader performance.
9800GTX->GTS250 - moved to the lower GTS badge, die-shrunk core.

8800GT->9800GT isn't a great one as the only real change is tri-SLI support that never properly materialised.

So not the same chip.

And a rename is taking an exiting product & remaining it.

AMD are not doing that.

Basically all that Nvidia have done through the rebrands is to change the PCB and in many cases reduce the power consumption. The feature set is more or less the same.
The 9800GT was the same card as the 8800GT. It was also rebranded to the GTS240. Some of the GT330 cards are rebranded GT240 cards although the GT330 seems to have many different specifications:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/NVIDIA-Launches-GeForce-GT-340-GT-330-and-GT-320-135698.shtml

The 8800GTS 512MB became the 9800GTX. This then became the 9800GTX+ and eventually the GTS250.

The 8800GS became the 9600GSO.

The 8600GTS became the 9500GT.

There were two different versions of the 8400GS.

The GT240 was rebranded to the GT340.

The G 210 became the G 310. The GT220 became the G 315.

Also the GTX465 is also slower than a GTX460 in many cases.

To get rid of stock of the chip, but ATIs new cards are not using the old chips so they have nothing to gain like NV

Either way you look at it your average Joe will look at the 6870 and figure it faster than a 5870, crazy naming scheme.

No one is saying that they are happy with the naming scheme, but don't try to exaggerate it to be more than the situation it is it to the point of what NV has done.

Thanks for taking the time to do that CAT-THE-FIFTH :)

GTX465 came out before the 460 tho so thats another story - sort of. Theres also 3 different versions of the 9600GSO :S

They haven't taken a previous high end part name tho and then released something overall slower.

nVidia has never taken their previous naming structure and released a new card using the incremental high end part number thats overall slower than the last generation.

If they felt they needed to rejig the names on the 6 series they should have changed the naming scheme up again.

The 9800GTX in many cases was slower than a 8800GTX but was far cheaper. OTH,Nvidia had the 9800GX2. So basically this is the same case with the HD5870 and HD6870.

2)If they felt they needed to rejig the names on the 6 series they should have changed the naming scheme up again.

1) That just proves that ATi is not doing the same as NV.

2) And again no one is saying that they are happy with the naming structure.
