6870 is here! for £170, WTF?? HELP!!

They haven't taken a previous high end part name tho and then released something overall slower.

If the 6870 was their 'high end' for this gen then fair enough, and they'd deserve to be slaughtered for it... but it isn't.This is only an issue atm because the 3 high end cards aren't out yet.

I agree that it is liable to cause confusion, but any semi-capable pc user should have enough common sense to check first before buying. If they don't then it's their own fault.

Still, AMD could have saved a lot of bandwidth for pc forum owners if they'd just held the 68xx cards back until the 69xx were ready for release & put all 5 out at the same time.

I was going to say the same thing but could not be bothered.

And the bath is getting cold.

Thats completely not the point... doesn't matter which are their high ends cards... the point is they have used x870 to denominate at launch the fastest single card in their lineup. Sure they might have intended to release a 4980, 5980 or whatever but it never happened - was the 5870 slower than the 4870? was the 4870 slower than the 3870?

If anything what they have done is worse than what nVidia did.

At time of release, the 5870 was more expensive than that 4870, which in turn was more expensive than the 3870.

The £60 difference between that 6850 and 5850 makes it pretty clear that the 6850 is not as powerful.

Anyone clued up would question the price difference... your average consumer is gonna go "great I'm getting a faster card and I'm getting it cheaper! win!"

You mean a numpty is gonna go "great i am getting an upgrade for much less than i paid for my original card". You would have to be pretty stupid to not think "hang on here why is this card so much cheaper than what i paid for my 5870 surely it can't be faster". I think most people know how fast something is based on its price and i think we are doing a lot of people a disservice here thinking they will make this move.

That is your average consumer for you...

That is not.

Because the average consumer who had anything comparable would not be buying anything like the 6870 so soon.

They tend to keep there stuff much longer & if they ever get in to the habit of jumping on anything new as soon as its available then they would have become informed of what the product is way before its released because they would been following its progress in anticipation.

i can only think of when i was an average consumer. The first gpu i bought was a 9800 pro. I bought this after 6 months of gaming on a crap gf4 mx and knew very little but i did some research and found out for myself what reviews at the time thought of the card. I was an average joe then and made a good decision.

I also get a lot of average joes asking me what to buy because they don't know themselves as i think most people especially british hate to throw money down the pan. I just don't think its that big an issue tbh. I think the only reason nvidia got a bad name for it is because they keep doing it every year with g92 with different tier cards. 3 years in a row if i am not mistaken, had it just been once it probably would have blown over a long time ago.

You can't make that assumption or typify things that 1 dimensionally when it comes to buying habits. I've worked in retail long enough to know what your average consumer does :D

Absolutely... thing is tho first time nVidia did it all the AMD fan boys were up in arms and no one with any sense tried to defend nVidia... when the boots on the other foot... funny enough its another story. Granted the scenarios aren't identical but everyone would be in uproar if nVidia released a GTX580 tomorrow that was slower than the GTX480 even if it was priced below it.

Did Nvidia ever release a renamed card that was slower than the card it was replacing??

The 6850/6870 does not replace the 5850/5870, that comes with the 6950/6970.

The 6850/6870 are to counter the 460's and replace the 5830, why they had to move them up to 69** is anyones guess but it's theirs to make. Maybe they thought that with breaking from the ATi name they could start a new naming sceme all their own! It's not ideal but hardly mind alteringly complicated either.

Do I sense some righteous indignation?

No it's just the issue is simple and doesn't need wall of text to explain it.
68XX naming is mis-leading and generally was a crap idea.
There was genuine reason for different naming as Barts needed to be moved up a price bracket, but they should have been named something else.

This, however is not in the same league as what Nvidia has pulled, but both parties naming practices are unacceptable, however to continue to endlessly split hairs is boring and tedious...

I wouldn't be, I couldn't care less.. NVidia, and any company, has the right to call the products what they like.

//edit.. What I think you are getting confused about is names and replacements - same as Raven.

Read my post 2 up for clarification.

Agreed - they should have changed naming convention entirely.

Can't see any reason why it couldn't have been the 6770 and 6830 (or even 6850 but that would leave them less room higher up).

Its not that different really... I agree its boring and tedious didn't stop anyone doing it the last few years.

Its not an assumption as i build PCs for the average consumer.

Average consumer does not go & by a gfx card to install them self they will get one else who knows what they are doing & more than likely they have already asked that person about the upgrade.

The 1 dimensional thinking is coming from you as the PC is not in a typical consumers new toy every year gadgets or utility appliance category.
