737-800 down in China

When you see the crash site, you can see why apparently they've found no human remains. :(

It's morbid but probably best that way than to see limbs and squished skulls etc and have to identify those. Some of the images from the MH17 crash were awful.

Yeah. I like to think that they wouldn't have known too much about it, hopefully.

recorder should be fine, designed to handle way more than that and relatively easy to track once theyv secured the area.

Yeap, it'll be a FA2100 FDR by L3 Communications fitted to the 737-800 series - https://www.l3harris.com/all-capabilities/fa2100-series-cockpit-voice-and-flight-data-recorders - and whilst it can be difficult to recover data due to impact/fire, the NTSB and L3 have the ability to remove the individual memory chips from the SSD PCB's and still get the data that way, rather than needing the device to be operable.

Wow, that's crazy! Those things must be built like depleted uranium tank busters.

pilot suicide maybe? cant think of a nose dive - straight down malfunction scenario. no distress call, no mayday, from level flight to nose down, doesnt make sense.

possible lost the tail plane, if the tail fins aren't there to balance the plane it basically becomes a lawn dart. happened to a Vanguard in the 70s.
pretty sure puters these days prevent a pilot from doing a dive like that.

really? damn, that's scary. i've played simulators yers back that corrected you, you'd think real planes would do the same!

looking at that chart, looks a couple of times where the plane dropped 3 to 5 thousand feet in about 5 seconds. remember than the next time the attendants advise you keeping your seatbelt on whenever you're seated.

Depends on how thorough the Chinese are (and I do see they are already saying there won't be an independent investigation) but as time goes past and there isn't other debris fields found it looks less likely that it was a tail failure. But, if it was a terrorism incident or some other sort of "accident" there may be reasons for the Chinese authorties to cover it up.

The flight recorders are designed to take a very high impact on their own, then they're fitted in a location that to put it bluntly is chosen in part because in most of the worst impact scenarios the front 75% or so of the aircraft can act as a sort of "crumple zone" for it reducing the gforce the recorders enclosure has to face, then it's solid state to begin with these days and solid state parts can take a lot of gforce by their nature, and I wouldn't be surprised if the parts chosen are more rugged/tougher than standard.

Hopefully the can find out what's happened ASAP.

I suspect if it is anything that could embarass the CCP (say a failure of maintenance) then it will be covered up but if it is a technical issue with the plane then we will find out because they will shout it from the roof tops.

Is it normal for a crash site to be cleared so quickly ?

I thought they document wreckage and 'look for clues' ( totally non technical words for it ) , Yet at 8.30am it has just happened and everthing ablaze, but at 8.30pm everything looks cleared ( The 2 videos on page 2 ) and it looks a pretty remote location to get to.

And no scorched earth ?

MH17 was brought down at a similar altitude and undoubtedly out of control, same as this plane - but the MH17 impact earth is black from fire damage, this site is just showing some fresh undersoil.

Not attempting to start any conspiracy nonsense but it all seems very quickly cleared.

Even if they wanted to clear it up as quickly as possible I don't think it would be feasibly possible to do so in just over 24 hours. But you are right in saying that they would normally document everything before clearing it away.

It isn't cleared AFAIK, it is basically vaporised. Check out the 737 MAX videos.

The lack of scorched Earth makes me wonder how much fuel it had left if any.
