7700k delided CPU delided

5ghz looks good on paper but what extra does it give you in gaming performance over say 4.5? Practically bugger all.

Maybe not, depends on the game though.

Seen a few comparisons, bioshock gets an astounding...1fps gain at 5ghz. Rise of the tomb raider a similar story. I'm sure there's a few exceptions but for the most part it doesn't deliver much more. Presumably it does better in synthetics.

I thought this was an old thread as I had deja vu from about a month ago, but have just realised this is only a day old. I believe this is not the first time an "8Pack approved" delidded Kabylake as turned up literally "delidded".

Not quite. The other one had not actually been delidded at all and just been placed in the wrong box and sent instead of getting delidded. This error seems to be with how they have stuck the IHS back onto the chip and it not holding firm.

Oh completely but I just don't think a blanket statement is that handy. It also of course allows for other things such as programs that prefer higher clocks and so it is of course user dependant. Now I wouldn't advice anyone who games to get the 5.0GHz but may well be worth the expense for the 4.9GHz tbh as it is delidded with warranty and cooler temps for user to play with.

CPU packaging was discussed a few weeks ago. It would probably cost OCUK less than 50p to put a binned/de-lidded CPU in a protective clam shell. Not only would this protect the CPU, it would give customers and prospective customers a better impression of OCUK. At the end of the day, profit often seems more important than reputation.

There is that and tbh I would actually like to see a nice 8-Pack box. Something like:

- 100x100x30mm flip lid box
- Matt Black external faces
- Large 8-Pack logo to center of lid top in silver for 4.9GHz - 5.0GHz and Gold for 5.1GHz & 5.2GHz
- CPU GHz level in bottom right corner with a small approved by 8-pack signature
- Insert sized to suit CPU with foam pad and insert removable to have the fluid stored underneath similar to how phone boxes are

To give an idea, the cost for such a box would be £1.50 if brought in unit quantities of 200. However considering the cost it woudl be to the company to what the customer is getting it certainly to me would give a much better impression and just enhance their high end reputation for quality and customer service. Currently the way they are shipped is something that does let them down regardless of how good the product is.

Just to add though it's not dented on the die, that's just what CLU looks like if you remove the IHS once it's been done/tested.

Send it back though of course...

Wow, that looks bad. Need to clean the silicon off, takes 5 mins with a credit card.

Nice and clean - this was my first ever delid, so simple, just use the tool and follow online instructions:

Nice, but all I'd expect is the CPU to be inside an anti-static clam shell, secured inside a small box with foam or something similar. That would make it look like the vendor had taken reasonable precautions to ensure that the CPU I ordered would arrive in good condition.

It would also be good if the de-lidded CPU was cleaned up the way RichUK did his. That's how I'd do mine.

Mine arrived on saturday and it hasn't been de-lidded properly. Bought the 4.9GHz one and the box it arrived in had 4.8GHz 1.35v written on it. Also, at 1.35v one core hits 100c in RealBench so there's something not right with the way the IHS was put back on.

Returning it tomorrow for a replacement.

Yep sounds like just recently there have been a good number of issues and standards slipping. This appears that it could be one person under time constraints as it isn't 8-pack that does the delid from my understanding and it appears OcUK need to take a look at this with not having any returns to 3 in a month is a big difference.

Further to that though, the 4.9GHz used to be the 4.8GHz so they are actually same chip per say with a higher clock possible and it is likely an older box before they moved from 4.8GHz to 4.9GHz (I believe they have stopped doing 4.8GHz now).

Oh yeah I understand, just believe for the cost of the works done the relative cost for some professional packaging whilst getting brand image etc out there also would be great. It could be that they even send a couple out to get reviewed by Kitguru and show it works, how it comes etc. I would expect any decent review to slam OcUK for the way they are packaged now.

In regards to cleaning them up, that I also agree should be done, it's a 30 second operation and thus relative again to cost that customer is paying seems something that should be done in principle regardless of the actual necessity to do said operation.

It does make me think I would only really be buying a chip like this to know that it can reach 5.0GHz for instance and I would end up delidding myself to do a proper job which seems a shame. It just feels like OcUK are going well this is good enough and it works and not that we have taken those extra steps to show we care about the product.

I have defended them in the past about certain things in regards to these chips but when the relative cost goes up by £300 for the 5.2GHz it is very hard to defend the costs that we are talking about in the extra care and finish they could be showing.

If you do the maths, the 4.9GHz chip is actually a bad deal.

According to Silicon Lottery, 78% of chips will do 4.9GHz. That means if you buy this chip, yes, you'll have 100% chance of getting in that 78% bracket, but you also have 100% chance of *not* getting a 5GHz Capable chip.

That wasn't true according to 8-pack as they are binned prior to being delidded which should allow better clocks. Of course it means the % is smaller I guess than the risk but that doesn't make it a bad deal naturally cause of such.

That's true however assuming that these are in fact the 4.8 chips being sold as 4.9 on the assumption that they'll do that because of the delid, I feel that 5 might be completely out of reach without ridiculously high voltage

Nope when speaking to 8-Pack, he said that all the 4.8GHz chips are tested to 4.9GHz pre delid and then they knock them back just for extra safety factor. They have since changed this and just now leaving them all at 4.9GHz instead and then delidding which means there is still likely something in the tank if only another 100Mhz.
