7800X3D now or wait?

Ah ok. My system won't boot if I set it to expo/xmp on my mobo. Not even with increased voltage so I just left it.
No stability issues other than that, just bothers me a bit despite knowing pathetically small performance difference.
what ram do you have, and most importantly is bios up to date.

I've been considering a similar upgrade, although for me that's mainly driven by the fact I've had issues with my overall setup with my 5950x.
.... I'm still not sure if it's CPU, MoBo or RAM at fault (it's fine with my 3700x), but gonna try a fresh OS install first. If it's a new motherboard I need (£100+), then I'm wondering if I'm better off going to AM5 now and selling off the AM4 kit.

Was considering a 7600 with a view to upgrading to 8800x3d next time round (or wait until 9900x3d or whatever they call it)

I'm at 1440p, but it looks like at 4k, a 5900x> 7800x3d (at least if just for gaming!) will be on average 12% gain based on the below, but with the added platform longevity.

Platform longevity is a fair point, a decent motherboard will get BIOS updates along the cycle and be as good as any future models, unless of course a hardware dependant feature comes along; did that even happen with AM4? SAM?

When is the next CPU due for release, have there been any indications?
Moore's law is Dead do leak decent info so a simple summation. Zen 5 is the same architecture, AMD aiming for ~15% uplift. Zen 6 is a redesign.

So my current thought is to go 7800X3D and then look at Zen 6 and compare it to Intel. I currently have 12th gen Intel and I won't be bothering with 13th or 14th.

Not sure about SAM, but definitely PCIe 4.0 isn't supported on my x370 board, so with that in mind I might be better off waiting until the next round of CPUs/chipsets come out.... although PCIe 3.0 still isn't a bottleneck with even a 4090 as far as I understand (and even only a few % with PCIe 2.0)

That's interesting, if that's the case then I'd be more inclined to just go AM5/Zen4 now, skip the next round of releases and hope a 650/670 board fully supports the features I need on Zen6.

That said though, I do kind of get the impression a lot of the time that MLID just proposes every possible theory of what's coming, then whatever happens can say "I was right" :P

Of course it could be that, at least in terms of SKUs within a generation, that the manufacturers are just gathering feedback from the rumours to inform their launch strategy, but I don't think that could apply to whole architectures!

No argument here but they tend to narrow down reasonably well as more info arises as you say and I think we're near enough now to Zen 5 for this to be a fair expectation. Maybe AMD has some other 3D cache tricks to implement but Intel made it much easier with their recent releases.

Ok, looks like I'm going to be stuck at work due to weather at the end of the week and some unexpected cash heading my way as a result - this is clearly an omen. :)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a spec list? The motherboards look quite pricey and I'm unsure of best compatibility for memory? Bearing in mind that I'll probably drop a future *X3D in there, so longevity is important.

I would require...

7800X3D
Motherboard
32GB RAM

TIA

I copied my reply from another thread as to the motherboards I was shortlisting.

£100 - 200

ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2

The bare minimum acceptable, loses the "E" stuff

£200-300 (based on current offers)

Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE AX (rev. 1.3 or later)

This is one of the motherboards that Hardware Unboxed recommended from a big group test.

Asrock B650E PG-ITX WIFI

I have an NR200P MAX case I can use which requires an ITX motherboard. Also has an eDF port which I've used before for a case mounted LCD screen.

Save the £750 on the cpu mobo and ram upgrade and put it towards a RTX5090 in 2025 - you wont see much difference with a new platform at 4k except 1% lows

I don’t think a 5900X would push enough frames to notice much of a difference. Assuming the next round of GPU’s offer a decent performance uplift of course.

I see the Tomahawk is a fair bit less expensive, what would you say made you opt for the Carbon? Anything performance related?
