7970/50 Arctic Accelero Users

Wow my 7950 just hit 86 degrees playing Crysis 3 ! that's a new record. My Accelero arrives on Tuesday, and I really need it !

Just a quick question, do the fans run off the normal graphics card pwm header for fan control? Can I still use afterburner to set the fan speed?

Yes they can be plugged into the cards fan power socket and controlled as normal.

One other thing to add, I tried to put an L shaped heatsink on the top left VRM, but it wouldn't actually fit on mine. It does look the same as in the images here, but there was not enough space between the black chip below and the capacitor above, I could just about squeeze it between them at an angle, but there is a flat black shroud below the capacitor which stopped the heatsink making contact with the VRM.

Good feedback on the Gelid, that thing is killing gpu's like MalX on crack.

Kotu pics plox. Mine fitted in at a slight angle but still made good contact with the vrm.

How's the peter coming Matt?

Its not im afraid. Sadly one of the screws required for mounting was worn down so its on its way back to pete which he will rma it. I did try it but temps were significantly worse 10c+. I think that was because of the screw though so i don't want to slate the Peter too much. I have to say though, its an ugly beast compared to the accelero. I've now reinstalled my accelero but sadly my os ssd drive died so im using a temp drive for the moment until my new one arrives tuesday.

Was it worth using some thermal tape and a sink on the top side of the card back of the vrm's for better cooling(the little black chips) there was a picture some where in this thread where someone had tried it did it actually help with the temps? matt have you tried it?

I've not tried it. You'd probably be better off putting a spot cool fan on those vrms tbh. Not sure if sticking a heatsink on there would short them or not.

Yeah, sorry about that. It was never an issue when I used it.

I did say that when you use the GT's, core temps are around 6-7c worse than with the custom fan setup. Add a couple of degrees difference in ambient temps + the Accelero offering maybe 1-2c better core temps and it could well be around 10c.

Like I've said a number of times, the Peter comes into it's own when you get creative with the fan setup :)

How were the VRM temps compared to the Accelero?

About the same, maybe slightly better. Honestly i expected more. The screw issue didn't help, also irked me that it had the wrong mounting plate on one of the sides and with the screw heads worn down there was nothing i could do to change it. I know you could still fit it anyway even with one adapter on but that's pretty poor from Alpenföhn to send it out like that.

I guess you need a load of different fans like you had blowing in different directions to get decent temps. Or it was a case of one more install pushed that screw over the edge. Still you live and learn. Part of me wants to try out the Prolimatech Black Series MK-26 Multi-VGA Cooler next. :D

That will have to wait now i just had to fork out for a new 250gb Samsung ssd though.

Yeah, that mounting plate annoyed me when I first got it, but since it still fitted the card just fine, I soldiered on and forgot all about it.
As for the screw... No idea. It must have been a case one install too many as it was as it was when I last removed it. Those tests were done just before that.

One set of fans blowing in from the bottom and another exhausting from the side did the trick as you can see from my results.

With fans, the MK-26 will take up just as much vertical space as the Peter and even more widthways mate.
I'd honestly say to go for WC or be satisfied with the accelero as you're not going to see a massive drop in temps by switching aircoolers :)

Yes i should probably leave well alone Pete but we both know that won't happen. I will keep my eyes peeled for new toys. Its a shame that the gelid kit doesn't seem to work out.

Just installed crysis 3 and my vrm 1 is close to hitting 100c. What's up with these coolers? They are great for the GPU, but absolutely horrible for the VRM's. I am not sure if I should send these back or not. I also put a fan right next to the VRM's and it didn't do much help.

Is this because I'm in crossfire at 6100x1080? When I played at 1920x1080 and disabled the 2nd card it was a tad better.

Squeak!

I'm l going to regret this!

That comes with a shim for the core AFAIK, so there will be a drop off on thermal transfer buddy which will negate(probably increase imo) any difference in core temps between the Peter and AC.

The AC's weekness is the vrm cooling, the heatsink needs cut to fit the chunky Alpenfohn vrm sink, that's the key to vrm cooling, that heatsink works wonders, nothing else I tried comes close.

Ultimately the Peter and the Black series will have better vrm cooling, but strip the shroud and custom cool the AC in a similar fashion with fans used with the Peter, I doubt there will be much difference in temps.

@Crevice,

CrossFire cards work harder than single cards, that's why temps are higher on the vrms, add to the fact they are sandwiched together doesn't help although a side mounted 120mm fan blowing air directly into the vrms works wonders.

I had one sitting flush on the AC frames(after the raised part with the Extreme 7970 writing) connected to my fan controller and temps reduced a fair bit but mine was modded to fit the massive Alpenfohn vrm heatsink-there's pics further back in the thread.

How is the performance of the "Prolimatech MK-26 Multi VGA Cooler"? Im looking into this over the Artic accelro extreme because you can have custom fans with leds to match my build etc
