7970 prices

Dont worry fellahs, we're getting priced raped over here too.....!

I dont know what to do... I have the mula, but i cant justify spending $700+ on a bloody graphics card.

To be fair, the OCUK own @ £420 isnt so bad, I may be able to convince myself to put a pre-order in before the end of the day...

Wait a couple of weeks and you won't have to.

By that time Nvidia will have dropped the price on the 3gb 580 to try to combat AMDs momentum in the short team and AMD will follow.

Wait a few more weeks and the turbo nutter editions will be out and we'll be hearing more about Nvidias new stuff.

There's no games coming out in that timescale that you won't be able to play as new releases drop off a cliff this time of year.

I'd wait a bit. There is no way that AMD (or OCUK for that matter) can keep these prices up for long. A 3GB 580 can be had for less than 400 if you shop around for example.

This is just the typical gouging you get from retailers. People are quick to blame AMD/ATI but when you look at the different prices between retailers on exactly the same cards it can only be down to some of the retailers.

Is there no RRP on graphics card then? It always seemed odd that retailers appear to do as they please with pricing.

Your guess is as good as mine, but I've always found that if you shop around you can save a lot of money, for example my card (not one they sell here I hasten to add) was £289 on the site I got if from whist it was £330 elsewhere for exactly the same thing! The variation in prices is mental and it really does pay to look around.

i thought amd had dropped the price on these to $475 ? , is the profit margin that big ?

FYI:

Key points here!

$475 is FOB board partner cost price.

So you have:-
$475 then add following:-
Board partner profit margin
Shipping Cost
Exchange rate conversion
Distributor profit margin
Shipping from distributor
Etailor/Reseller profit margin
VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tempted by the £420 ocuk one but i'm going to try and be strong and hold out until the non reference cooler cards come out in a couple of months

£220 for a waterblock! :P the stock ocuk is a nice price mind, certainly in comparison to the rest and the best buy considering all cards are the same at the moment bar that silly xfx "overclocked" card running at 1ghz with the duel fan cooler. A healthy selection of manufacturers at launch too.

Laws of supply and demand, high demand so they can command a premium, prices differ wildly as well seems some passed on the AMD cut and others didn't.

Will hold off for a while to see where the prices settle. I want watercooled but £640 for a 7970 is too rich for my blood.

Might go 2x6950 w/c or a 580GTX
