84% Of Gamers Do Not Meet Recommended Spec for BF3

so what is 2 sli gtx470's clocked at 800/1600/1800 equal too? max or less?

Prolly be able to max settings at 1680x1050 with 4x AA but possibly have to ease off a couple of settings at 1920x or above. Should be able to play mostly maxed out.

800MHz on the core of a GTX470 pretty much matches a stock GTX480 in most cases but you do have a little less performance in certain areas, at 840MHz you will match a stock GTX480 in every aspect except VRAM and exceed it in many areas.

EDIT: As this comes up a lot I'll reproduce the relevant data from gpureview.com:

From left to right stock GTX480, GTX470 @ 800MHz, GTX470 @ 840MHz

6870 should manage a mix of medium and high settings fine, probably mostly towards high settings at below 1920x with 4+x AA and at 1920x with lower levels of AA.

Fine - I understand that, but will I be able to play or launch BF3 with Steam so I can play with my usual friends and invite them to game etc?

If all you want is the steam overlay, so you can access friends list and chat, etc., while in game, I expect you'll be able to add it to steam like you can any other non-steam game.

It just makes everything far more complicated than it needs to be.

Very few game distribution clients are well coded, almost all of them tend to be bloaty, poor interface and want to start with my PC bootup and/or have to be running to play the game, inevitably they have their own friends list, etc. seperate from each other. Most of them add an extra 1-2 steps to actually getting into the game rather than being more convenient.

Rather than having a dozen different clients and having to remember to reinstall them, remember settings and login information when I reinstall the OS, etc. etc. I'm just gonna stick with steam, which unfortunatly or fortunatly depending how you look at it has the virtue of being the first widely adopted distribution platform and for the most part is a convenience to the consumer.

I understand an agree, but most people have The EA client as well anyway, so for people maybe just holding off from buying straight away may help send the message as most will buy in the end anyway even if they don't like the EA client.
