8800 320mb GTS Feb 12th.

It may, but if I were you, I would be aiming at a 450W PSU at least...
The issue here is that the psu in the T1 is non-ATX standard so it would mean a new case and psu which suddenly makes the upgrade a damn sight more expensive. Anyone out there have a GTS and a older style T1 case?

/Ghetto mode on. Well, technically you could always run the PSU outside the case, or even place it in a hard drive bay or something if you have space. Really depends on if you can see your PC, if not, who cares if wires are coming out of it. (this is assuming the worst of course).

not sure I like the sound of that. Has anyone managed to get an 8800 working in a T1?

This 320MB version believe it or not is hardly any slower than the 640MB version.

In fact in some games and at lower resolutions the BFG 320MB is quicker than some reference 640MB cards.

I believe the 320MB GTS will handle the latest games even at 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 with relative ease.
I don't think the RAM will make much speed difference for current games regardless of resolution. The only question mark for me is if the amount of texture memory will be sufficient for next gen titles. I have done a bit more research and have found the following about DirectX 10:

  • Larger Textures - Texture dimensions are 2048x2048 or 4096x4096 in DirectX 9. In DirectX 10 textures up to 8192x8192 are supported.

  • Virtualized GPU Memory – In the past, the amount of texture storage was limited by the amount of onboard memory the graphics processor held. Now textures can be stored in system memory, eliminating the memory bottleneck on texture size. This is handled automatically by DirectX 10 regardless of hardware, driver or game!
So although textures may well be bigger it probably won't matter. :)
But if this is true why did nVidia make DX10 cards with 640MB?

Ive had a look at the BFG site and it says that a 400w PSU with 26A on the 12v rail is required for the 640mb GTS.

Do you reckon a Enermax liberty 400w ( 30A on 12v rail ) will be ok?

Cant really stretch to a 520w corsair :(

The great thing about being an 8800 owner, is even if it is the slowest version or the fastest version you still retain 100% smugness and a big grin :D (and 10k in 06 ;) ).

I'm wondering if you SLI'd them with a 640MB version, would you get 320MB of graphics RAM, 640, or 480?

You get 320MB as it would defualt to the lowest value

Well, accessing system ram is MUCH slower than graphics ram....So there's the reason right there. No to mention that you need to keep on driving things forward with newer and seemingly better products ;)

In regards to SLI - could you SLI one of these with a 640 one? Or a GTX? Seems crazy if so..though cool, I guess.

Think I'll have to get one of these.....

Just out of interest - What would the performance increase from a 7900GS be like?!

Also - What about Vista 64bit drivers?
And - Will I have any issues fitting it with a DS3 and an Antec P180?

The performance difference will be absolutely massive, cant say about Vista as the 8 series hasn't got any Vista drivers yet, the beta ones are crap, officials are god knows when as they have had 5 years on em already, but ive heard in the next couple of weeks they could be out, but i wouldn't hold my breath not if they've had 5 years so far. :D

Quesion 1: Massive improvement from what I have read.

Question 2: Well, I have heard they are terrible for the moment trutnfully, this is even more true if you wish to SLI.

Question 3: DS3 will work beautifully, I have no clue about the P180 though.

*EDIT*

Beaten, AND managed to click quote instead of edit on this post too :/

Can check if it fits the p180 here on tosk's case compatability chart. :)

Im guessing if the names are in white, then they fit no probs, but the names in cyan may have probs, so it looks like the GTS fits the p180 fine, but the GTX has probs.

It'll also work fine on the DS3.

Hopefully it will fit my case too. I have a vision of literally screwing my motherboard down on top a table or something lol.

My case is some cheap non brand one, I hink I may have to move down my hard drives to get it to fit.... not that I mind doing that. My love for the 8800 shall go beyond such trivial boundries. How large is the card, I might have a quick measure of the space now, so I can prepare Myself for a case overhaul ;)

would i get away with a Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W with one of these? if so what about a GTX?

Easily as those are Crossfire certified for 2x x1950 XTX's in crossfire, so if they can power 2x of those then i think a single GTX will be no problem for it. :D
