Becuase the second hand market for crappy old GTS's will collapse very soon if it has not done so already, making any upgrade cost very expensive.

I got nearly £170 for my GTS. Would I get that if I tried to sell it next week? Of course not.
Yes, sell your GTS now, but do what I am and get a cheap piece of crap to run Windows while you wait for the new GTS to arrive and GT prices to stabilise a bit.

Whilst it makes sense dumping the GTS now, rushing into a GT may not if the prices drop in a few weeks and/or the GTS proves to be mega.

as mentioned by mrk, the sparkles are looking interesting

just wondering how cool and overclockable that would be with a 120mm fan strapped to it.

or how about this

Honestly, some of you are just rampant consumers!! :)

So, basically, it looks like the 8800GT is about 30% faster than an 8800GTS 320mb and 12% slower than a GTX, according to the Toms Hardware review at least.

The only thing I would say to those rushing headlong to ditch their 1st gen 8800's is check the resolution you game at.

I did think about changing, but then would I really see the difference between 140FPS and 182FPS in something like HL2 at my gaming resolution (1440 x 900)?

Yes, if you can change it for no cash and only an element of mucking around, then why not.

But, lets say I could sell my 8800GTS for £140, being realistic, after ebay fees etc, I might clear £130, then I'd need to add £50 to that to get myself an 8800GT. Then maybe another £15 to £20 for a cooler if the one on it is as loud as some reviews say.

It just isn't worth it in my case, so I'll be waiting to see what's around the corner and to see how I get on with Crysis etc.

Oh, and the 1st gen 8800GTS/GTX and 2900 Pro/XT cards haven't become rubbish overnight, they're still the same powerful cards as last week!

I can understand though that you'd be mad to buy one instead of an 8800GT if you were moving from a 6 or 7 series/x1800 etc.

Surely the price of the 8800GTS has got to come down now, as most places seem to be selling them for about the same price as the 8800GT?

Ever heard of the Members Market?

I'm finding it quite baffling how people are so spectacularly missing the point. No-one said the GTS/GTX were crap. The point is that the new GT beats the GTS, and comes within spitting distance of the GTX, all for a low price. Therefore selling your GTS/GTX now while they still hold value and buying a GT allows you to gain performance in the case of the GTS, and in the case of the GTX allows you to get to within 12% of the performance for a £100 saving. Simply, it's a no-brainer.

Anyone who doesn't understand that concept must be as close to remedial as you can get.

well seeing as some places do sell it a lot cheaper than others if you sell your 8800 card for 140-150 its a no brainer if you pay the cheapest price.not like it takes massive amounts of energy to change a graphics card.also it would cost you about a tenner to swap for a faster card.so selling now is the best thing for a cheap upgrade.if you pay the extortionate price that some are selling for then thats your problem for not getting it at the cheapest price.

You mean the place where everybody wants something for nowt?! ;) Derisory offers ahoy if you stick an 8800GTS in there for £150 at the moment IMO...

With respect sir, I think it's you who's missing my point.

My point is, that unless you're one of these people who crow about how they paid next to nothing for their last card, and how they just sold it for £x more than they purchased it for, the move to an 8800GT is going to cost you money (as in my case in fact). I already said if you can do it without spending any significant cash, then great, or if you're in the market for a new card now, also great.

My related point, as I'm sure you picked up on if you read the whole post, is that what's the difference between 140FPS and 182FPS, really? It's like changing my car with a top speed of 140mph for one that does 182mph. Useful if you need a car that can do over 140mph, but check that you do need the extra performance is what I was saying, especially if it is going to cost you cash to get it. That bit is aimed at existing 8800GTS/2900XT owners by the way, just to be clear!

There are plenty of derogatory posts in this thread towards the old revision cards, along with dubious 'advice' about ditching your old card now before it's worthless. Don't forget a new 8800GT will have depreciated as soon as your order has been processed too.

I guess my post was aimed at those falling over themselves to sell what are perfectly good cards, to get 'the best thing ever' (until the next thing anyway!), and to question if they really need it.

My post was aimed as a foil to those people who are screaming sell your old card and buy the new one!! Call me public spirited rather than remedial if you don't mind. ;)

Hears of minimum and average framerates? Those are what you need to be looking at with current gen titles. Max frame-rate, as you say, means very little. The more powerful the card, the higher the minimum frames will be, and thos makes a huge difference with all the eye-candy turned up. :)

My remedial comment was tounge in cheek. :p

Ah, that's where my analogy fell down a bit!! The 140FPS is the average FPS my system gets in HL2, not a maximum, but hopefully it makes the point!! :)

Understood! :)

@ Jack Bauer, unlucky!!! Mind you, haven't you got a bit of a cold coming on?! ;)

I do not actually think the 8800GT will be much fatser than a 8800GTS.

Why am I saying this?

Well, my current GTS overclocks to 650/1720/2000. At this speed it beats a stock GTX in most benches. The GT has stock settings of 600/1500/1800. Assumimg shader and memory clocks will reach similar levels to my GTS, and that the GT core reaches 700, the only difference is ~50MHz on the core and those extra 16 pipelines (minus 64bits of mem bandwidth).

At stock, the GT does slaughter the GTS, but when overclocked it may be quite close.
