970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Absolutely it's like the Nvidia boss has thrown feces at them and all they have done is say "please sir can I have some more"!.

That only works if nVidia gimped the cards in purpose - they didn't. They tried to make the extra 500mb available instead of sticking with 3.5gb. This works well for single cards, but it's obviously screwed up sli. We were (some of us) hopeful that nVidia could fix this in drivers but if they are really sitting tight and not going to fix it then they deserve all the returned cards they get.

I'll still stick with my single card though. no whine, near silent, perfectly suited to the 2560x1080 that i game at. There is no reason at all for me to return this card but SLi users (and other single card users if they were intending to go SLi with nVidia sitting with their thumbs up their arses) certainly have every right to do so :)

Anybody else looking at this situation and thinking of picking up a 970 as either a return / B grade item or at a very much reduced second hand price given resale values are going to take a large hit?

Every cloud & all that!

Whilst the higher thermal output should certainly be a consideration, it only really becomes an issue when the noise to dispel the heat gets too loud or the card gets too hot and throttles. Both of these were an issue with the reference cooler, but aren't with most aftermarket coolers.

Your purchase justification complex has no bounds mate. Wow.

Nvidia took the easiest design route, they knew that the market wouldn't like it so tried to hide it and only made sure reviewers actually discussed specs so they could pretend that they never advertised it if the fan got splattered.

I don't see it happening and why:

1. The cards performance and all the awards it won still stands. It's the same fantastic product everyone was raving about and recommending.
2. NVIDIA won't change the price so the new price will remain and they are still flying off the shelf.
3. It's still vastly cheaper than a 980 and is close in performance, less than 10% on average yet a 980 cost 50% more.
4. There will not be an influx in B-grade as OcUK has negotiated good support with it's partners to return the returned cards for brand new replacement or credits, OcUK only needs to cover customers shipping and it's own shipping cost and it's own brand cards. So any B-grade due to this will be small numbers and b-grade deductions will be inline with other B-grade items. If Gigabyte do decide not to look after OcUK then OcUK will foot the bill by making a loss on them in b-grade by selling them for around £230ish which would be typically b-grade price and the OcUK 970 will be around £250 in b-grade.
5. Other etailors still have their head in the sand and are refusing RMAs, only OcUK and Caseking have taken action of their own backs and put the customer first as we believe customer is king.

So the new price won't change and as such second hand prices also won't change, the card only becomes worth less if they cost less to buy new and the new price won't be changing.

So does the gtx 980 actually have 4gb vram or is it memory b0rked just like the gtx 970, but with better performance because it simply has more shaders?

Yep, definitely. At the right price I would definitely consider getting one as a stop-gap purchase.
