970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

I had the "problem" too from the get-go, but thought it was driver related. Now this info came out and I tought it was Vram related and only specific to the 970.
Then I got the chance to test it out on 980's also - and that showed that the 980 was giving me the same quirks. I simply demanded more of 970 and 980 than they could deliver whether or not they have 4GB vram.
So I'm holding out for 8GB 970 versions before parting with my 970 4GBs.

Forget 8gb versions of the 970 or 980 as this would open up a whole load of other problems with the 256bit bus. Having 8gb of VRAM also means the cards could be moving twice the data across that 256bit bus.

I would wait for full fat Maxwell if you want more memory.:)

The thing is, ever since Titan was introduced, Nvidia don't really allow AIB partners to release double-memory release, at least not until it reach of point of not longer being the flagship card (i.e. the 780 6GB was only available after the release of 780Ti, but even that was shortlived and the 780 6GB was only available in small quatity and was available for only around a month or so).

I think OcUK's refund offer is up to end of Feb? So it would be good try in on a 4K monitor (if you have one), or just 2560 monitor yourself.

While there might be people lucky enough to not have problem, it's not guarantee that would be the case for everyone, as there's been people with 970 SLI reporting stuttering issues for a while even before this whole scandal blow up. Even if the chance of having and not having problem was 50/50, it still quite big a risk.

Yeah Feb, but I dont have more than 1920x1200@60Hz so perhaps I would need to use DSR (nvidia, not returns) to expose it? I have a 144Hz 1440p on preorder so originally planned to get the second card the end of March. I fear I test it now and dont see the problem till I get the new monitor.

It's an idea I guess but I feel a bit weird buying another card just to try it out. I hate the awkwardness of returning anything and havn't had to so far with OcUK.

Thanks for the advice though. Time to stare at my bank account for a while...

Arhh - you're right about that... didn't see that issue coming.:)

i received my 290x lightening edition from ocuk today

i took out my 970s and put this single card in, fully maxed out all the settings at 1440p

guess what? the game is much smoother on my single 290x, no flickering, no stuttering, no random 3 sec slow mo freezes and then back to full speed. then i checked the memory usage and it was around 3700-3800, so this is probs why my 970s were tanking

dont get me wrong im not getting a solid 60fps more like 30-40 but the game is so much more enjoyable

i will test it on a single 970 as well to see if it was an sli problem but so far this 290x feels very nice

Welcome to red team, the stuttery, bad drivers, power hungry, flaming hot and expensive as phuark powerbills crew have fun :D

I'm very impressed by what Gibbo has done for us and that OcUK is offering refunds for those who want them. I will be buying all my PC equipment from OcUK from now on, which I have not done in the past. However, I've just completed a major upgrade. The motherboard and CPU came from Amazon (another retailer who has dealt very fairly with me concerning returns in the past), the graphics card from OcUK.

I'm relieved that the news broke just in time for me to change my pre-order for an OcUK reference 970 to a 980. If I'd already received and installed the 970, I would have kept it as I think it would have been fine for playing at 1920x1200. However, I upgraded to a 980 because I didn't want to take the chance that I'd regret having purchased the 970 in 12 months' time. I think a lot of console ports will need 4GB of VRAM. I looked long and hard at the AMD 290X, but concluded that both the 970 and 980 would still suit my needs better. While the 290X is faster than a 970 at 4K, it's slower than a 970 at 1080p. It grated to spend more money with NVIDIA, but I felt I'd be cutting my nose off to spite my face if I bought a product that didn't fit my needs as well, just because it wasn't from NVIDIA.

I'm disgusted by the way that NVIDIA has behaved. I don't think they have a leg to stand on legally. It's clear to me that NVIDIA has engaged in false advertising. I suspect they may try arguing that they never advertised that the 970 had the same memory architecture as the 980, and that misinformation had been spread by third party reviews. For example, I just checked the review in Custom PC from when the 970 and 980 were launched. It reads, "Elsewhere, the full 4GB of GDDR5 memory again runs at 7GHz (effective) across the same 256-bit interface, and all 64 ROPs are intact too". We now know this statement to be false. However, Custom PC would have based their review on the reviewer's guide supplied by NVIDIA. Jonah Alben, NVIDIA's SVP of GPU Engineering has admitted that there was an error in the reviewer’s guide and a misunderstanding between the engineering team and the technical PR team on how the architecture itself functioned.

This whole thing has been engineered from start to finish so they think they could get off on technicalities if caught.

Swindlers, how come none of the OEMs saw the error either?

^ I don't really follow financial stuff, but even though that drop seems small.. i'm assuming that's not good in the least overall :p

Nvidia was capitalised at 11.2 billion dollars at the start of last week. Now it's capitalised 800m dollars lower, though I'm not going to trawl through analysts' recommendations and sector performance to decide if any or all of it can be put down to their current problems.

The things is...let pretend they could get away with arguing that 3.5GB+0.5GB memory is still 4GB memory, there's no way for them to get away with calling call 56ROPs 64ROPs, or calling the two parts memory bus of 224-bit and 32-bit "256-bit" memory bus.

Calling that 224-bit+32bit bus "256-bit bus" is like those fools on the bay advertising a 3GHz quad-core CPU being a 12GHz CPU...

Are 980s going to drop lower than the current lowest of £399 before the end of Feb?

The £399 will go up as previously explained it's being sold below OcUK cost price at present due to GBP weakening against USD making OcUK cost price now higher than they selling it for. New price will be around £440 which will kick in middle next week or when stock is gone.

It was a swindle. When marketing asked tech the difference between a 970 and 980, did they really say it's just the same except one card has a few more stream processors?

And if you were in tech you'd make sure the differences were correctly stated between the two unless you had a vested interest to not do so.

I've worked in marketing for 8 years. Ive helped to produce online/offline catalogues, mailers, eshots for the top vendors like HP, Cisco, Microsoft etc and spent budgets over a million on campaigns despite being relatively junior at the time. I know how things get proofed and the sign off needed for marketing collateral. Even if it was a genuine proofing error it became a cover up job and it took consumer action to press nvidia into releasing the truth.

Bad form.

Thought I'd have another crack at Advance Warfare again last night to see why I was still getting stuttering. Turned out that the default form of AA, (filmic smaax2) shouldn't be used with SLI or crossfire, once I changed it to bog standard smaa the stutter stopped and the frame rate shot up into the 140s.
