Poor performance on modern cards is purely down to developer laziness, trying to dump their console games onto PC with as little optimisation as possible. Google for some PC demos from Fairlight etc. and you see what skilled programmers can make a PC do.

Quick question, for anyone that knows the answer.

In terms of warranty, after the first year who covers Asus cards? (year 2 and 3)
I've narrowed down my future 980 choice to either: KFA2 SOC, MSI gaming or Asus strix.
(AMD is not an option due to the heat it dumps out sadly).

I've heard a lot of nice things about the Strix but their lack of responsiveness for warranty bugs me. (Touch would you never need to use it though!).

Thanks in advance.

If you buy from OcUK the Asus 3yr is dealt with by OcUK.

Long time lurker here.

I just wanted to say I've been reading this thread from the very beginning and what overclockers is offering relative to GTX 970 returns is the very definition of customer care. Just awesome to see.

I'd always choose reference cards for SLI

I think it depends on the reference cooler. My mate just switched to 290x pcs+ crossfire from 7970cf and his temps are better but the main difference is his Pc is much quieter in comparison. In my Haf x I would be pretty confident of removing enough heat with custom coolers if I utilised all of its fans and benefiting from a quieter pc over reference.

Yeah, the reference 290x cooler is pretty bad. I love the look of the pcs+ 290x. looks like a beast!

I have the same cooler on my 290 pcs+ and what I find funny is for all the stick the 290/x gets for being hot and loud its by far the coolest running card I have ever owned. 32 idle and around 65 load depending on my room temp. It never gets close to 70 and does so while being pretty quiet as well. It's also cheap as chips compared to some other brands or at least it was. My mate picked up his 8gb pcs+ cards for 320 a piece which I think is very reasonable for what is among the best 4k cards on the market.

+1. i also have that card. it's very cool and quiet.

And as for single card use?

Custom for single card use in most circumstances is better. If it wasn't then what use is a Custom cooler. The only time a reference might be better is in really small cases where it's useful to dump the heat out of the case. If you have good air flow then custom coolers should run cooler and quieter every day of the week.

For single card, I'd choose the best all round aftermarket one. To be fair, if you have a good case/cooling, then aftermarket cards in SLI will be no issues.

So two thumbs up for one single Asus Strix 970 then?
