970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

It all depends if Nvidia are going to drop another Titan.
If they don't then you know the performance mark AMD will aim at. The 970 and 980, low bar. The fact nothing has been mentioned from them probably indicates they have something to counter big Maxwell.

If that's the case, it's anyones guess.

For AMD the 970 and 980 are not much of a challenge as the 290Xs are already slightly faster @2160p.

Hence low bar ;)
Same gen cards are normally around the same performance. Which is weird why the 970 and 980 came in only slightly faster than 290/X @<1440. Yes, they've improved on the PPW dramatically, but absolute performance is lacking.

The only explanation would be to lower production costs of the 780ti whilst still retaining top dog crown and have a shorter generation. That is around the 1 year mark before dropping the big cards.

Whatever happens, i'll nodoubt buy both sides. I know you're down for 4 of each :p

Ah all right. When do you think the Titan II will be released? The last two were released in February I believe but I saw some rumours about March this time around.

I really don't know.

I think NVidia probably have the card ready to go but they will choose the best time for maximum profit.

One thing that could influence it is if people stop buying GTX 970s which would leave a gap in their line up meaning they could move the 980 down the order and launch the Titan at the top. All pure guesswork though.:)

Decided...I'm not having it...I bought the 970gtx in good faith to go sli in March for a new 1440p monitor...not played above 1080p since Time began...

600 quids worth of gpu power in sli is not a compromise....it's a commitment...nvidia can **** off

Thanks for all the info. Much more knowledgeable now. :)

I think the next up for AMD is the 380X for this year but again pure guess work I think the performance will be pretty close to the Maxwell Titans and if there is a 380P version about 10% slower than the 380X. Or putting it another way you are probably going to need two 380X(P)s @1440p to get close to maxing games for the next couple of years.

You think the 380X will be as good/better than the next Titan, so you're expecting the 390/390x to be a fair bit faster than the Titan?

I think the 380X will trade blows with the Maxwell Titan and we won't see the 390/390X until next year.

What will be interesting is to see what type of memory turns up on the 380X and what it does for performance.

It certainly seems unthinkable that AMD would produce a card in the 380X that didn't bury the 970 in the ground and left the 980 for dust. Surely anything short of that would be suicide, even in light of Nvidia's recent screw up. They have a big chance here to really win back some ground. Hopefully they nail it. It's lack of competition that sees companies like Nvidia behave the way they have with this memory fiasco. Why would they care if they know everyone is going to buy their cards anyway!?

Most don't care and are keeping their 970s ;)
Some have taken the opportunity of a full refund and paid more towards a 980, and some are feeling upset that a company would dare lie to them and vowed never to buy Nvidia again :p

Turn your settings down?
I'm the wrong person for these threads, never understood why people insist on cranking details so high, if your card(s) choke...turn something down or off.

I think the issue is, that if the 970 was as specified it would be fine for 1440p SLI, but because Nvidia lied about those specifications it isn't.
