hello, really need help here.. do get my 970s still and SLI, or go for 980 OcUK Ref, or the deal on MSI R9 290x 8GB, am only gaming @ 1080p. at min got R9 270.. if get only one card not SLI then goin get myself nice AK Racing Premium Gaming Chair Black & Black :)

if your on 1080p just go with the one card, the 980 is a good choice and the 300 quid 8gb 290x is epic, will you ever need 8gb who knows

Really Tempted to send my G1 back as i feel a little "done" but do i ? is the 290x 8gb really got much more punch ? I have NEVER owned an ATI card, Always been a nvid fanboy but they really have got my back up with some of their comments around the net.

GPU horsepower, the 970 should have it, but VRAM horsepower the 290X wins it.

1080P gaming, 970 all the way, its the champ.
1440P gaming, tough choice!
2160P gaming, 290X 8GB all the way. (But ideally you need 2-3 in CF)

:)

In that case im sticking with the 970, I will go 4k when it arrives, However in a couple of years to be honest when its actually here. @ that point i will then upgrade to a single card that can handle it. I game at 1080p and dont plan on changing that until 4k becomes a little more mainstream.

I am the second owner of a MSI GTX 970 bought on 9/10/14 from OCUK. I got it on 3/11/14

Is it possible to send it back for refund or credit note or would I need to be the first owner? Thanks

The first owner would have the order number and a record of the transaction with OCuk.

This is a question Baily or Gibbo,

I'm returning my OcUK reference 970s but I am looking to keep my business with OC and after all this surprisingly with Nvidia as I found their software was excellent and I apart from the issues I had with certain games I liked the cards.
I noticed some people were able to step up their 970s for 980s am I able to do the same as I'd like to go for the OcUK reference 980s.
I know I'd not get the discounted upgrade that others are doing so is it possible for me to just pay the extra with the return or do I need to go through the RMA, refund then sale process?

Thanks

Closing Thoughts

Compared to last week's article that looked at the GeForce GTX 970 in a single GPU configuration, the SLI results show more variance differences between NVIDIA's top two flagship products. In a vacuum, this wouldn't mean much - we expected there to be more complications and frame to frame variance when looking at multi-GPU configurations. That has always been the case regardless of how well tuned NVIDIA or AMD drivers get.

But under the light of the recent memory issues surrounding the GeForce GTX 970 we have to look at things a bit differently. Yes the GTX 970 has fewer shader cores and runs at slightly lower clocks than the GTX 970, but would we expect to see similar levels of frame rate consistency between it and the GTX 980 in these games, at these settings when running paired up in SLI? My initial inclination would be yes.

So the question sits before us: does the ROP count / L2 cache size difference that was revealed last week by NVIDIA account for the frame variance differences between the GTX 970 and the GTX 980 cards in SLI? More than likely: yes. And that may end the discussion for many of you but consider this last point. The largest difference in variance on BF4, the primary example of this showing up for me in data, was run at 3840x2160 and 150% pixel scaling. That is essentially running BF4 at 6K!

The Call of Duty Advanced Warfare results occurred at 2560x1440, a much more reasonable resolution. In that case the data didn't show a gap in experience between the GTX 970 SLI and GTX 980 SLI configurations, but my time playing it certainly did. The GTX 970 SLI setup result in more hitches and frame rate drops than the GTX 980 cards but again, we were pushing every setting to its absolute maximum, even going as far as enabling 2x supersampling.

My takeaway from today's testing is that users with or looking at an SLI setup of GeForce GTX 970 cards appear to be more likely to run into cases where the memory pools of 3.5GB and 0.5GB will matter. Because you are able to reach higher playable frame rates with two GTX 970s than just a single one, stretching out and increasing image quality settings is more common. If you are that type of gamer, looking to stretch the boundaries what settings are playable, then it is worth a warning about the differences between the GTX 970 and the GTX 980.

For the others out there, the GeForce GTX 970 remains in the same performance window it was at prior to this memory issue and specification revelation. For $329 it offers a tremendous level of performance, some amazing capabilities courtesy of the Maxwell GPU and runs incredibly efficient at the same time.

AMD is aware of this debate as well and it should surprise no one to see the Radeon R9 290X sitting at $299 after rebates from several add-in card partners. Let the GPU wars continue!

It would APPEAR to me that for 970 SLI, it's only a matter of time, if not already, before you start seeing issues with certain games. I've yet to see or hear any evidence which completely assuages me of all concern in this regard... so I'm left in a quandry whether to just keep my single card until the 3xx series out... which if those released benchmarks are genuine, looks like it will be a stonking performer... or get full value for the 970 by returning and go for a 290X 8GB or 295X2 today. At 1440p it really is a VERY difficult decision! Part of me still wants to get another 970, but if I do that and have problems I will drop kick myself in the face!

Hi Legend,

I took the 970 sli route and within in a week I was noticing problems in games, stupidly I listened to suggestions from the forum which just said "the current set of drivers are bad" so I waited. Worst decision ever.
I found problems in games like SoM, BF4 and Dragon Age Inquisition, while not having any problems with my 290.

If you're at 1440p go 980 or AMD, I can't speak for everyone but I certainly regretted 970 sli at that resolution.
