970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

It would APPEAR to me that for 970 SLI, it's only a matter of time, if not already, before you start seeing issues with certain games. I've yet to see or hear any evidence which completely assuages me of all concern in this regard... so I'm left in a quandry whether to just keep my single card until the 3xx series out... which if those released benchmarks are genuine, looks like it will be a stonking performer... or get full value for the 970 by returning and go for a 290X 8GB or 295X2 today. At 1440p it really is a VERY difficult decision! Part of me still wants to get another 970, but if I do that and have problems I will drop kick myself in the face!

But hasn't the 3xx series also got 4gb vram so will run into issues just as quickly as NV cards with the new batch of games that are pushing vram limits currently?

Yes, from what I've heard it has... I doubt we'll see them releasing 8GB cards from the off, they will likely follow a few months later I imagine. It does appear that the best and only viable alternative to SLI 970 TODAY is 290X 8GB cards in Crossfire.

I was looking at the 980, but the 4GB issue is still present there of course, and the 8GB 290X cards can be had for £200 less than the cheapest SLI 980 set-up!

Right, I couldn't stand it any longer, just pulled the trigger on this:

BenQ BL2710PT 27" Widescreen (1440)

the missus isn't going to be too pleased but I couldn't wait any longer. I've intended to 1440 for a while now and this issue has forced my hand as it were. When it arrives I'll be able to see the ACTUAL difference between 1080 and 1440 in games when using a single 970 (for me anyway). I don't play any zombie games as they leave me cold and FC3/FC4 doesn't interest me either. If the performance is really bad between the two resolutions, I'll stump up and replace the 970 with one of the new AMD offerings. I'm really waiting for the new Homeworld remastered game to be released and I'm really looking forwards to see how that runs/looks at 1440. When the BenQ arrives, I can do a comparison of Vram usage in Crysis 3 between 1080 and 1440 if anyones interested. I also have no problems with reducing a few settings if performance is too badly affected. :)

I hope you get the monitor before the missus finds out lol

Did you speak to them over the phone as I got fobbed off this morning with them trying to talk to me via email. Still not had any response from them as yet.

Still havent responded to me either or approved my forum account so i can post asking what the situation is. A very poor show imo

This is a question Baily or Gibbo,

I'm returning my OcUK reference 970s but I am looking to keep my business with OC and after all this surprisingly with Nvidia as I found their software was excellent and I apart from the issues I had with certain games I liked the cards.
I noticed some people were able to step up their 970s for 980s am I able to do the same as I'd like to go for the OcUK reference 980s.
I know I'd not get the discounted upgrade that others are doing so is it possible for me to just pay the extra with the return or do I need to go through the RMA, refund then sale process?

Thanks

All we do is refund you the money and then the customer places a new order, that is how we are doing it, our system does not allow us to do credits. :)

I'm suprised after all this that ENB's comments on the ram issues arent being discussed more.

I'm getting cold feet!

I read this on a few forums and I went to ENB's facebook page too. Seems he has proved that their is only 3.5 GB of useable memory on the 970 and that once it reaches that 3.5GB it uses system ram. He says that all cards use a bit of system ram and that this use shoots up when they run out of VRAM. It happens after 3.5GB in the 970 and not 4GB like it should do if it did have 4GB.

What about the physical chip in this case? It's there, it exists on the card, is one of the memory chips a dud?

It's interesting reading anyway, not sure of how true/false any of it is though.

I would say the reason it isn't been discussed much is most people have decided what they are doing and the very helpful chaps at OCUK are making it easy to return if they want to.

Will my gtx 970 have the memory issue on any game if I play at 1080p. I'm playing dying light and it seems fine. What are the resolutions and games that will have the memory problem

Thanks

At 1080p you should be fine for some time to come. The issues are occuring at 1440p and above, and even then more so with SLI.
